P0441 help!?

Hey guys. So Ive recently ran into a problem with my RA. A few times now I have come to a stop and the engine will drop idle and then die. It did this a couple times before one day I caught it. I used my heel to give it gas and I kept the engine alive. This is the only time during this issue that my CEL has came on. I turne don Torque real quick and pulled the error code. P0441 - EVAP Emission Control System Purge Flow. Ive looked this up and have yet to find any other cases where this causes someone's engine to idle low and die. So Im not sure if this is the main problem or not because I have reset the code and it has continued to randomly die when I come to a stop and Ive caught it a few of those times as well, without getting the code again.

Any ideas?

Also anyone with an auto RA. What does your car idle at then you come to a stop? Mine has been idling at around 700rpm. Before I had an engine swap a few months ago Im not sure if it had an idle that low.

Thanks for the help ahead of time guys! I really appreciate it!

Doing some search on google it looks like either is your gas cap, which I don't think since your idle is messed up or the purge solenoid valve is stuck or dead. The purge solenoid valve is located right under the intake manifold on the passenger side, right under MAP sensor.

I have an auto and at the stop mine idles at 750 and with AC on at 700 but it doesn't die nor tend to die.

Thanks Dacib! I feel ok about the low idle now. But its still making me a bit curious as to why its dying. Could that solenoid mess up cause it to die when it comes to a stop? I havent saw that anywhere that the P0441 has been mentioned.

It other news. Someone side swiped my car at a party last night... Great...

TROUBLESHOOTING HINTS (The most likely
causes for this code to be set are
• Evaporative emission purge solenoid failed.
• Evaporative emission ventilation solenoid failed.
• Fuel tank differential pressure sensor circuit
related part(s) failed.

sorry to hear about your car

searched EvoM and found this thread..
now i'm the one that pulled this code lol..
googled how to fix it and apparently you can try tightening up your gas cap, reset the code, then drive..if it comes up again, then check for vacuum leaks in the gas system..hmmm..i reset the code and haven't gotten a CEL yet..hope it doesn't come back
just thought i'd share that with you guys!
take care!

I think I ended up fixing this by pulling a solenoid valve off my spare engine (located on the passenger side of the intake mani) and replacing the one on my current engine. Never had the problem again.

dammit..
the CEL is on again and i just pulled code p0441 AGAIN..
i think its cos i let the fuel level come close to 1/4..
s this normal?
i dont have a spare engine like you guys do so i cant just pull out that solenoid
i cleared the code and well see if it comes back again.
btw today was brutal..driving 40kmh behind gigantic salt/snow plow trucks..

Btw I know this is off-topic but I calculated my fuel economy and I'm only getting roughly around 10 km per litre. That's crazy huh. I feel like I'm driving my Jeep all over again idk why but for sure I'll be tuning up sometime soon. Its crazy how much gas my RA guzzles up. /rant

10km/l in winter sounds about right to me.
If it's not then I guess I have the same issue as you.

the thing i hate the most with lots of snow is when im easing up on my throttle then all of a sudden i go over some "hard snow/ice" and my rpm goes up. to me, thats a big waste of gas but even so ive been reading up on the "hypermiling - goal 40mpg" thread and most ppl here are getting almost 300km+ at half a tank. is there something wrong with my RA? ive been taking good care of her and i really want to keep her for a LONG time as i love her to death but the mpg concerns are killing me right now...

Fill to the brim, stay out of Mivec and you will get 200km by 3/4 and 300km at half tank.
When I can sustain driving that slowly I see that mileage, but that's not what Ralliarts are for.

i've tried EVERYTHING and i can't get close to 200km @ 3/4..i really think i'm due for a tune up

i upshift around 2000 to 2500 rpm and i coast on neutral as coasting on gear for me sucks since my TOB rattles like i'm chewing rocks in my engine

i always fill to the brim and i make sure to seal that gas cap tight. i also have all 4 of my tires inflated to 40psi and she coasts so nice and free compared to 32psi.

what else am i missing?

Change gear at a lower rpm and stay in the highest gear possible for any given speed, develop the throttle finesse to hold a gear as long as the rpms are at idle or higher, dont floor it.

When last did you change your air filter ?
I change mine every spring.
Outside of these things, I dont do anything special to my car.
I cannot say it's ever been tuned, it reached 140 000 km sometime in the last week or so.
What would a tune involve ?

Having your tyres overinflated can lead to premature wear, so there may be no net savings there, my winters were set to 30 psi on a November day when it was over 0C, goodness knows what pressure they have now that it's bloody -20C every other dam day.

Getting great mileage is over rated man, for now I try to be good till the needle reaches 3/4 then situation normal resumes.
