DIY, Side Mirror Removal and Disassembly

Do auto maintenance at your own risk. You could injure yourself or damage the car.

Text relates to the picture below the text.

1. Remove (pry out) the 2 nylon trim plugs from the weather-stripping behind the leading edge of the mirror garnish.

2. Remove the plastic interior trim panels to access the mirror attachment nuts and wire clip. Unwrap the foam insulation from the wire clip. Using a flat-tip jeweler screwdriver, gently pry the tab on the wire clip to disconnect it.

3. Support the mirror and remove the 3, 10 mm attachment nuts, then remove the mirror assembly, feeding the wire through the door.

4. Tilt the mirror glass up and insert a cloth-wrapped, flat-tip screwdriver behind the mirror glass from the bottom. Gently twist the screwdriver and pry to unsnap the mirror glass from the nylon pins on the motor. It has some glue on it and you will have to pull to separate it.

5. Remove the 3 hinge screws from the bottom of the garnish:

6. Remove the 4 frame screws and the 3 motor screws from inside the fairing. Disconnect the wire clip from the lower outboard corner of the motor. Remove the motor.

7. Note the color and position of the 3 wires at the motor clip. Using a jeweler flat-tip screwdriver, lift the plastic tab that holds each wire terminal to the clip and remove the clip from the wires. Now the wires can be fed back through the housing.

8. Feed the wire through the housing a little way and separate the garnish from the fairing enough to access the sliding clip. Using a flat-tip screwdriver, gently pry the sliding clip straight out till it unsnaps and slides out. (See the sliding clip in picture 4.)

9. Now you can remove the 5th hidden frame screw from behind the sliding clip.

10. Note how the garnish, sliding clip, wires and fairing go together. Feed the wire through the housing as you separate the pieces.

At this point, I painted the fairing storm gray and the garnish gloss black. Then I replaced the weather-strip on the garnish, where it fits against the door.

Reassembly is the reverse. Insure that the wires are inserted into the motor clip the same way they came out.

Great post. Helped me out a lot swapping out the fairings for Evo RS versions. Could not figure out how to get the glass out before coming across this thread.
