Question Loud clunking sound after moderate to hard braking... Any ideas?

Hi,

We have a 2009 Lancer Ralliart. In the last few months the car has started making a loud clunking sound about 1 second after moderate to hard braking. It seems very odd because it doesn't happen every time and it happens after, not during braking. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this noise? It's happening more frequently as time passes on.

Thanks,

Chad and Jess

When you brake, is there any vibration or shimmy felt in the steering wheel? Or just the noise?

You're driving an 09 Ralliart according to your profile, so have you changed the transmission fluid by now I hope?

I bought the car from a dealer a few months back and they said they did the sst fluid but nothing else. Sounds like it's coming from the rear diff so I ordered some oem fluid to do the diff and transfer case. Hopefully it fixes the noise. Thanks for the reply.

Any new news on this? I'm having the same issue on my '11 Ralliart. Sometimes it sounds like a double-click, almost as if each rear wheel is clicking. It also kind of sounds as if it's the brake pads unsticking from the rotors, but I'm not sure...

It sounds like it's coming from the rear diff. Everything is really smooth shifting and downshifting wise. So I'm assuming if it was the sst it would have shifting problems.

Some of the clunking noise may be coming from the play in the wheels. Pull off your front 2 wheels and try and turn the wheel laft and right, you'll notice the noise because of the play.
Our trannys do make a lot of noise.

*bump*

Problem solved

got all the fluids changed out and it was the rear diff. The fluid in there was never changed at 83 k and it was getting clunky. Lucky I changed it when I did because it could have had serious problems. I haven't owned the car that long or else I would have changed it earlier.
