Roll racing/ half mile racing, which tires?

I'm looking to either do a 1/2 mile or roll races later this summer, I've noticed no one really uses full slicks for these evens, why? I have two sets of wheels and tires, looking to see if I should run my hoosier qtp/fd and rx7 wheel combo, or my evo x Enkeis with bfg kdw2's? Are the qtps too soft or something?

Would some drag radials work best for something like this? I've been looking at ordering some for these events, but I don't want to spend money if I don't need them. The kdw2 tires that I have wheelhop, so no launching if I use those.

Thanks for any input!

Qtps can get too hot and blowout. Also, I think they'd be scary as hell at 180 mph if they stayed together.

A high speed rated quality street tire is probably the safest. Hell, even RS3'S and such don't have the speed rating

That's what I'm running into. I'm also looking at the m&h and 555r drag radials. Think 245/45/17 is too skinny?

Nah. Straight line grip is more about the height of the tire than width anyway.

I ended up getting Pilot SS as street tires, so they could double for half mile stuff...

Just called m&h and hoosier on their drag radials, as I know they have softer sidewalls. They do not recommend test tires for 1/2 mile as they don't know if they would hold up. I heard the nt555r wheelhop bad. If I knew they would be good on the launch I would just do those, but I'm just not sure which way to go

Don't be too concerned with the launch, even rolling out with a decent amount of power you will have fun and be fast.

I've been to a few 1/2 mile events and slicks aren't the best idea. Both events were held at Air strips and had massive amounts of dust/loose surface so traction is always an issue. I'd recommend a soft street/track tire with a normal sidewall. It will be more forgiving at high speed .

Depending on how much power you are making you can also choose a tall or short tire to suit your needs.
My current set of tires are 255-40-17 continental extreme DW (25"). They work well for my current power levels but I have a tall gear that hurts acceleration a little.

I ran my car at a Wannagofast event in Ocala,FL and went 149.7. I went out there with the following
E85
Real Street Performance tune
500whp with a Fp red
4.11 gear and ran thru 4th gear at 8500ish
stock engine with an AMS pan and a kiggly HLA
Bald 235-45-17 RS-3's . new they were 25.4"

Thanks for the info. I called Myles at ER and said rolling out wont really hurt MPH, just get a street tire that can handle the speed and you're good to go. I'm going to use my kdw2 and evo x wheels I have already I guess, I'd like to find some lightweight wheels to use, but meh.

I'm shooting for 180mph+, we shall see how it goes, now I need to change the tune a little to help keep the motor together.

Thank you

Many of the faster GTRs use the Toyo R888 tire. It is an amazing tire. I have a set on the back of a 1000+hp Supra and they work well.

I just went to the event in oregon, ran a best of 177mph, good enough for third place in the Sedan class first day, and 1st place in sedan roll racing.

Street tires are best 100%. I saw some guys on drag radials so either or will work fine. I saw zero slicks at the event
