Rear diff clunk after a hard upshift?

I did a search, but did'nt really know what to type in to search it, so I figure I should just ask. I thought I remembered reading a thread on this a while back, but could'nt dig it back up. Anways, i finally reached my 1000 miles yesterday and changed the oil today. After work today, I decided to give it a little pull from 2nd through 3rd... after I got near 7k rpm in 2nd, I shifted into 3rd, and right when I did, the I got a loud CLUNK from what sounded like the rear diff. Did I do something wrong or is there something about AWD that should be taken into account? (I came from a FWD then RWD car... this is my first AWD). Did I shift wrong or screw something up? I decided to stop messing around after that until I found out what happened. Any feedback would be cool. Thanks.

Chances are it is the soft rear diff bushings flexing under torque. I've heard this a number of time from other new Evo owners.

its fine, drive on, my viii did it and my ix does it. you will see the evo makes a lot of weird sounds but its really a tough car. I beat the **** out of my viii with 400 hp for 30k miles with no problems and im at 11k on my ix doing the same thing. I just dont launch much. The launch is what tears up our cars.

I use to get that noise when I would drop the clutch really fast between shifts, but now that I take my time with it, although still quick, I don't get that noise no more. Your letting out the clutch too fast in between shifts.

It's the driveshaft hitting the carrier bearing near the rear diff.

What about stiffer diff bushings? Didn't someone mention a set of rear bushings that solved this issue?

I've just been shifting a tiny bit slower and it's solved the problem. Shrugs. If you're at the drag stip then it might affect your time a tiny bit tho..

i'm pretty sure energy suspension(maybe prothane if not ES)makes polyurethane rear diff bushings for the evo to eliminate the movement that makes the "clunk".

Whew...I'm glad someone asked this. I thought maybe it was just my shifting. Being my first awd turbo and 6 speed.
