At 850$, I went to Power FC with my 3sgte. Great ECU with the FC commander, live flashing without a laptop. You will be way over that price/effort with the hassle you are about to have.

Just to say that a Gen 4 3SGTE is a great engine, a lot of power and reliability, VERY similar spool/feel to the Evo. Good luck

Also Youre gonna have to get the Evo cam and Crank sensors to work on your 3s. This is why i went proEFI The cost Greatly outweighs the benefits. I then contemplated a 4g63 swap with a Eclipse V6 trans into my MR2 but I already had a Gen3 motor. So maybe next Sw20 will get the mitsubishi godzirra motor.

If you are still doing this just some small insight

When doing the conversion on the Evo 3, it does not use a crank angle sensor, it just goes off the cam angle sensor.

You WILL need the Evo 8 knock sensor.

I'm still considering this idea actually but I was wondering where you started running up the price on this project. Also I wanted to ask what are the required sensors for the evo ecu (besides the MAF, knock, and CAS).

Right now I'm gathering parts. I have the evo 8 ecu plugs, first gen cam angle sensor and spare gen4 3sgte ecu. My buddy has a evo 8 so I will barrow his ecu for testing. Right now I have less than $20 invested, I had a spare ecu and got the plugs and agle sensor from a u pull it.

I'm going to remove the plugs from the spare ecu and make a jumper harness. Once that's done I will start testing. It may be a little while because I bought a 90 alltrac that needs some work. The car that had the 3sgte was sacrificed to rebuild the alltrac. So until I put the engine in the alltrac I will not be able to test anything.

I will keep everyone updated and will pick your brains when I have questions.

OFF TOPIC but I have converted about 5 or so early Evos to 7/8 ECUs and have never changed the knock sensor on any of them. I have never had an issue with false knock or with it not detecting knock. It works just the same.

Nope, the stock sensor works. It gives a cam position signal and the equivalent of a crank signal.

Stick with the ecu meant for that specific motor.. MegaSquirt is an outstanding option and probably your cheapest standalone you'll find.

I did not make this thread asking what type of aftermarket ecu's there were out there. I made this thread to get insight on the evo 8 ecu and ask questions. If you don't have anything pertaining to this thread please make your own thread.

Further more to properly run my car on that abortion of stand alone aka mega squirt I would have to spend nearly a grand. Not to mention its not very user friendly and I wouldnt get the reliability of an oem ecu. I know what options are out there I've priced them all out. I personally do not need a stand alone for my power goals but I figured this would be a cool project that isn't going to cost me much.
