Question ECU Unlocker, does it unbrick or just unlock? Difference?

Hey all-

A couple of weeks ago I attempted to flash a map I had flashed before to my Ralliart (same ecu as evo x) and it got stuck in the middle and bricked the ECU. Probably because I didn't "exit programming state" before turning off the car when there was a driver error (I think). I also stupidly didn't run the car to charge the battery first, I bet the voltage could have dropped and killed it.

I didn't know about ECU unlocker until now, so I paid someone to bench the ECU.

Would ECU unlocker have solved my problem, and un-bricked the ECU? Or is that for a different problem?

I am nervous to flash again, of course, that ruined my day! But if ECU Unlocker will unbrick me in the event I get stuck again I'll feel much better about doing it.

Thanks in advance for any help

no, it does not unbrick. Unlocker just gets past the changed INIT.

You need to bench the ECU if you brick it.

Thanks for the reply.

How do I know if it's bricked, or just locked? The tuner who unbricked it used the terminology "I unlocked it so you can go flash it now." Wasn't sure if they meant unbricked, or unlocked.

I guess to clarify, what would I see in ECU flash that would tell me it's bricked, or the INIT is changed../locked?

Thank you

A friend had bricked an E8 ecu because he ran out of laptop battery before the flashing process was complete, but he successfully used unlocker to "unbrick" it, to be able read/write to it again.

I'm curious, any further details on how to bench an ECU?
