Lifters: hydraulic vs. solid

Well one of my lifters I think finally bit the dust. The sound is like someone shaking a can with a ball inside. Is this normal? If not what are the pros and cons of soild and hyd. lifters?

Solid can't float to my knowledge.

Generally with solid lifters, you can run a more aggressive cam lobe with more lift/steeper ramps and run it to higher RPMs without float because you can get away with much higher valvespring pressure. They need to be adjusted more often though because you'll have a lash spec to maintain. Also, they will tend to be noisier (for obvious reasons) and therefore can cause issues with the knock sensor. To take true advantage of them, you probably need to be revving your car really high and have head work.

But what about the noise. I've read that this is pretty normal, but it doesn't sound normal. Kinda sounds like a typewriter. If im correct a little thicker oil should correct the problem.

if you're hearing a tick tick tick noise its normal, all DSM motors have that sound.

Hydraulics do not require lash adjustments, soilds will allow higher revs. Remember that you will probably need valve springs and a tubo upgrade if you want to spin much over 8k.
