stock air box w/ stock filter Vs. K&N cone filter

Graphs made from data obtained from utec log.

stock air box = the graph is pretty smooth
cone filter = the graph is so "saw-tooth"

This is real convincing evidence that the stock air box with stock paper filter allows the motor to pull as much air as a k&n cone w/o the fluctuation. Everytime there is a disturbance, the ecu will pull timing! My car feels much smoother, no more surging, going back from cone to the stock box/paper filter.

OK could you clarify what exactly is on the Y-Axis? It says hertz which means a frequency. But frequency of what exactly? Engine noise? Thanks.

That's Karman, which is air flow.

The stock box minimises turbulance that cause the anomalies. So you are good.

I did this same test with the UTEC with the same results. Stock air box is the way to go for best performance.

It reads the same as the stock box with stock filter but with a few more ponies.

Thanks for posting good info. The only mod on my '05 is an injen intake and upper IC pipe. I am thinking this is one of the reasons it is running ****ty. Going to put the stock stuff back on soon and try another route.

Good idea. I put my stock airbox back and intake back on and made 370 hp on stock turbo. There is no restriction in the stock airbox for the stock turbo PERIOD!

Move the battery to the trunk and put the stock airbox bracket back. Better weight distribution and more room in the engine bay.
