Possible starter problem

I just jumped a friend's car with my 03 Evo. Now if I go out and try to start it it will only make a singular metal clank sound. No sign of low voltage so I'm assuming my battery and alternator are good. I tried a few times, then manually held the white button under the clutch pedal with my finger when turning the key to see if the pedal was really pressing it in. Then it started. But the next day it did the same thing, but pushing the thing in didn't help this time. I then pulled the fuse in the engine compartment for the ECU and popped it back in, then it started. Hmm... Today it fired right up with no problem in the morning, then at lunch when I left work, it clanked once, then started the 2nd time. It seems to be intermitent. Any ideas?

Other symtoms the car is having lately is that the fuel pump seems to be louder than stock (stock pump) and I am getting boost taper in every gear even before 5,000rpm. I've checked hoses on this problem, and everything seems to be tight. Might be ECU?

Sounds like the conditions are all basically in the morning. What are the temps. and the weather like where you are from? Water is a big problem when it comes to morning hard starts, and no starts, and then in the afternoon they start right up.

Check the top of starter to make sure that any sockets or screws have not fallen there. I had that problem on my car and there was a 12mm socket that fell there and was shorting out the starter.

Check the ground cable as they are known to become loose and do not always ground completely.

did you check the top of the starter like i said? Screws, sockets etc.. tend to get stuck there when they fall into the engine bay. I bet something is shorting it.
