toluene

Dan, 112 leaded fuel is $6.50 here and 110 unleaded is $52 for 5 gal. I got 5 gal of Toluene (114 oct) for $37.50. The price isn't much different and it's unleaded.
The results are ...
I mixed the Toluene (~1.5 gal) with about 7 gal of 93 octane and ended up with around a 96 oct mixture.
I was able to run 1º more timing at peak torque, but up to 4º more up top. The fuel mixture also leaned out by ~1.5 AFR (average). i assume this is due to the stoichiometry of toluene.
With the toluene and new maps I ended up gaining 3 mph in the 1320' and lowered my ET by .22".
So, basically ... it works.

Use xylene. It has a higher octane .
Works better if you premix it with heavy oil, and pure mineral spirits.
You can run a 30% mix if its warm still in your area.
It also has a higher specific gravity.
F1 cars used to run on a toluene fuel.
First thing you'll notice is a glass like idle, then quicker spool. And its all good stuff. We made 560 hp on 93 and xylene in a DSM. 33psi.
That stuff rocks!

Why not do meth injection which is the cheaper alternative to high octane fuel. I've been running meth for over 2 years now without any issues other than boost gets very addicting. Well...one minor issue, pump was leaking but was replaced at no cost by vender. It cost me $45 bucks for a 5 gal bucket which will last more than 10 fills at the pump. Which is $9 bucks for 2 fills at the pump to run high boost and more timing. Just another alternative.

The amount of toluene I'll use over the next 3 years will probably not amount to the cost of a meth setup. I would only use it for drag passes and maybe a splash for auto-x and track events.
Meth itself might be cheaper, but having it available at the push of a button would make me use way more of it.
