Pulled the intake manifold off and what we found

I have been working on a friends EVO the past week or so. I pulled off his intake manifold for a swap and we foung the intake ports and valves covered in gunk! Thick black oily stuff. I have never seen more than just carbon deposits. What is this and what would cause it? The engine/head were built not too long ago. It seems that oil is getting in there somehow. Failed head gasket maybe? It was inside the intake manifold too, just not nearly as bad. What do I tell this guy his problem is? Pics:

This is what catch cans are supposed to prevent. Though, that DOES infact look pretty bad

Was it clean after the rebuild or was it like that for awhile?

Is the PCV vented or recirculated? EGR still intact?

by the way how long did it take to remove the intake manifold???

Are the bolts easy to get to? especially the manifold bracket bolts?

I just took my sheetmetal off today(after blowing it apart), it only took about 30 minutes max from start to finish. The stock IM would be easier as its easier to reach underneath for the bolts. Its a pie job.

Check the valve seals as well, thought that stuff looks kinda more like crank vent stuff as the ^guys^ said.

ok, good to know as I plan on putting on my Buschur ported IM and BR 65mm
t-body next week along with a hondata style IM gasket....just gotta wait for my replacement cam bolt to come in first so i can finish my cam install.....

then after that back to Mark at TT for a retune.... will pump the boost up another 2psi and see if we can tune for more power across the board....

The motor only has around 500 miles on it. It was absolutely cleaned very well before assembly. There is no EGR. PCV is vented to the bottom of the car.

Doesn't the head have to be pulled to check the valve seals?

Hmm... PCV is vented to atmo... that would leave the turbo the next component that could put oil into the intake. Have you checked for blow-by? High crank case pressure can force oil back up the turbo oil drain and cause it to leak out of the seal on the comrpessor side which would then be carried through the intake.

Just a guess.

The cold side of the intercooler piping all the way to the throttle body did not have anything in it at all. Very strange indeed.
