Used cams - Useable or not? (Pic)

I bought these as mint condition cams on the forums. Can I get your opinions on this. The grinds that are in the cam. Is this usable? My mechanic said he won't put em in since it's F***ed up.

Here's a pic - it's huge but I felt it was necessary so you can see exactly what my problem is.

Any opinions and comments welcome

I don't know about that. It's definitely not mint condition. It looks like cam was installed with something inside the cam cap, or something got inside there. If you don't think that will damage the inside of the cam cap, it should be ok. It's hard to say without being able to feel it.

I wouldn't put them in either.

It's about 1/16th of an inch deep.

Take them to a real engine shop and have them POLISHED up. They SHOULD be ok, but let your shop decide.

I still run some HKS 272's that I had polished due to a little wear. Been running those since 04' IIRC. Think I paid $300 for the cams (when they were not cheap), and $40-$50 to have them inspected/cleaned up.

No the thing is I bought the cams as perfect condition ones. That they're obviously not and I'm not willing to spend more money on them, but the question is - are they usable or not. I rather ship them back and ask my money back and buy something else.

Why do I keep failing to follow my own advice. I'm not rich enough to buy cheap.

They can probably be polished up and be fine, but if they were supposed to be perfect condition I would save the risk and extra money and just get your money back.

I don't think the guy will take them back, thats why he sold them. It a sad thing when people sell junk I would try to contact him and see if he will give you your money back, if not then make sure you leave bad feedback so no one else gets burned by this guy. But worse case those can be cleaned up a bit, but on the other hand you should not have to do that cause they were suppose to be in mint condition.

Personally.... i wouldnt use them in my buddies Chevette. Then send them back to the deuche that sold them to you! But what others have said about polishing them... or sending them back........it's really up too you!

I mean there is a NOTICEABLE groove in the end of the "mint condition" cam!

Yeah seems I'll have to get them machined since I still got claims that he shipped them in perfect condition and yada yada... And that I'm the one that f***ed them up or something... Dunno.

Anyone interested in a cheap set of hks 280 cams that need a bit of repair?

I would say they are "N.F.G." as is. They would probably fine if you had a machine shop "true" them up and polish them though.

This is why I'm hesitant to buy anything on the internet from private individuals.

I would not put those in my car as they are.
And You're prob. gonna run into trouble trying to get the seller to refund your $.

I would take them to a machine shop and see if they can clean them up.
They would know if they are salvageable.
Chances are that they will be fine with a little work.

How are the lobes?
Is there any noticeable grooves on the lobes?

Lobes seem fine, all that we noticed wrong so far was the groves next to the oil seal.

If anyone will have a definate answer it would be him..
Greg's a really nice guy and would tell you if they are salvageable or not..
good luck and let us know what he says
