It's mostly drivers or a bad clutches. 40K on mine. No issues.

so if i've allready lightly toasted my 5th gear syncros but i change the oil and double clutch going into 5th for now on (it's only an issue on track days still....it's still great on the street) i won't be doing further dammage to my other gears due to metal shavings bombarding everything, will i?

i can poney up the dough for a 5th gear syncro or double syncro upgrade later if i have to, but i'd like to hold off a full tranny rebuild as long as i can without having to drive like a grandma everywhere i go....

There is no easy button for this one.
I lost 5th gear and reverse. The shop pulled the tranny and found out clutch was bad. Had to replace reverse gear/slider, and clutch. Very rarely grinds, now.

Damn, my 4th and 5th gear is gone...Got Excedy Single Plate clutch 5,000 miles ago, but track the car often. Don't know if its a clutch issue or a synchro issue. Oddly, both 4th and 5th gear gave way at the same time.

Grinds when I upshift at high RPM (quickly)
Does not grind when I downshift from 5th to 4th, I do heel and toe rev-match
Does not grind when I upshift slowly and sort of pause in neutral to let the revs go down

You WILL need a rebuild

Or I have a brand new mitsu evo 9 trans with all the latest updates for 2,350 if you need to go that route.
What are the updates for the tranny? I just took my 9 in Friday so they could hear the grind. Got a call today telling me that its common and there is no fix for it. Sorry, but thats just not good enough. The car hit 20,000 miles last week.

My car drives perfectly normal and shifts to 5th just fine, but if I'm over 75mph going from 4th to 5th it grinds. I don't care what anyone says, it may be common, but not normal for any tranny to grind. I will be contacted on Wed. by the service manager and hopefully they will at least try to replace the 5th gear and synchro.

No its not mostly the drivers. This is my 2nd EVO. Understand that you have a 6 speed MR. This is obviously a 5 speed issue.
