3rd and 4th gear lockout.

i'm having a an issue. My evo won't down shift to 3rd or 4th gear, i'm getting lockout. I can up shift just fine, just can't down shift. Also the weird thing is that, if my engine is on, i press down on clutch and put it into 3rd or 4th won't go either. But if the car is off it will go in just fine. WTF

shift fork inside the gearbox or something that holds the synchro in place is my bet. Remove the drain plug and check it for metal chunks. Anything bigger than micro slivers will indicate something destroying itself inside there. If not, then it could be something that holds the synchro(s) may have gotten loose. Regardless, it is gonna require opening the gearbox up to check for certain and to repair.

BUT before all else, you may just want to check for clutch adjustment and the cables/bushings just to rule those these two things out.

Good luck

hey Charlie I bet you really could use a tranny right now!
I feel bad I bought your good one.
I do have a 8 tranny that shifts great however 1st gear is pretty loud(crooked tooth on the Imput from what I was told). Other then that it is perfect!
You could probably run it until you want to rebuild it!
Its in the garage waiting, PM if your interested! hope I can help!

Sounds like a synchro issues for sure. Do you guys rev match on down shifts?

Maybe think about rebuilding with a set of dog gears.

I had the same problem, and I sent mine to Buschur, and I they had to replace to 3-4 shift fork. Mine was completly destroyed. I am probably no making as much power as you guys, I believe my problem was due to the ACT clutch. I am switching to a Excedy twindisk HD.

Know this is many years later, but ever get that fixed?

I have the downshift problem to 1st and 2nd, and thinking it may be a transmission speed sensor.
