Lots of Uh-Oh noises from rear end

OK so this problem just popped up in the last 2 days or so and I'm really upset because if it's what I think it is, I might not be able to take my car to the CenFla Procco meet this Saturday which I've been planning for a few months now .

So there is a loud whining/whirring noise coming from my rear end (definitely rear end) that can basically be heard at any RPM. Under 40, it sounds like loud tire noise. At 55, you can start hearing a sound kinda similar to straight cut gears but not deafening. At 80, it starts to sound like a table saw.

The big thing is that it still does if even when I throw it into neutral so I've definitely ruled the transfer case out. My heart is saying the rear diff but I wasn't sure if throwing the car into neutral would have any effect on it.

Another thing is that I just changed the rear diff fluid again yesterday (AMSoil) and when I pulled the drain plug out, there was minimal metal shavings on the magnet...more like metal dust.

So what do you guys think it is? Rear diff? Something in the axles? Extremely loud tires?

Help me out!!!

I would suggest that, even though youy don't think its the t-case, to check the fluid anyway. I had the ring and pinion sheer off on one and it FELT like the issue was in the rear, but it was the vibration traveling down the drive shaft to the rear of the car. And if it does turn out to be the t-case, get it fixed BEFORE the ring and pinion shear off, it gets REAL exspensive when that happens...

But the sound is still there when I put it in neutral. That excludes the transfer case from the running list of potential problems.

Thanks for the input though.

Looks like I'll be calling up TRE soon.

It was pretty damn golden coming out. Just like when I put it in. And there weren't even any shavings on the magnet, just a few specks of metal.

Doesn't make sense to me...

If you are in neutral and rolling the transfer case is turning.

What is a surefire way of determining what it is exactly? I'm still not sure if it's the rear diff or transfer case. I haven't launched my car in forever and this just popped up a few days ago.

Kind along read but off our local forum if you care to read it just ghoes to show that how you can think it coming from somewhere but isn't

http://evoempire.org/index.php?/topi...ost__p__169673

I would never rule out the TC just by putting it in neutral as noises can and will travel up and down the d/s!
