Ralliart Front diff
Hello,
My son has a EVO 8 JDM . Owned for 7 month's. 35k km's. He has done 10k km's since buying it.
2 Weeks ago he lost drive to the wheels. Me being Father and a mechanic had the task of repairing it.
I removed the transfer box first and dismantled it. It has a Ralliart LSD fitted to the front diff. This has blown apart. He says he drove off from the lights as usual. I'm not convinced. I thought this car would be bullet proof-it maybe. But not my son proof. Has anyone come across a similar concern? The spline section where the left front axle enters the diff is where it broke apart. Then the whole diff centre has cracked apart inside the hemisphere. I have now removed the 6 speed box the clean out the metal filings from the centre diff bearings.
we are considering the Quaife front diff to replace the ralliart one. Good choice? or not?
Thankyou for your thoughts.

sounds like your son launched the car by just dumping the clutch. not a good thing for awd drivetrain. Launching an evo you must do a little clutch slip to avoid damaging your drivetrain. Quaife is a great choice i know sheptrans uses that for their top tc upgrades. http://www.sheptrans.com/transcase/evo.htm

Dismantling
Hello again,
I'm dismantling the gearbox as we speak , you know what I mean.
And number one son is with his girlfriend. Hum , she is nicer than I am. So I don't blame him really. LOL

The front diff failed. The debris from the ( explosion) went into the centre diff carrier bearings. The metal debris didn't damage any bearings as the car stopped dead. And was tilt trayed from there home.
Plus I wanted to check first gear and for that matter all the gears.
All was good and I gave it a good cleaning.
When we drained the trans oil when we first got the car I thought it odd not to have a magnetic drain plug. But when I dismantled the trans there is a large magnet fitted into a cavity in the lower part of the case. Under the main centre diff drive gear. Only way to clean it would be to dismantle the trans. But then again it would get dirty if there was a problem with the trans.
Cheers

Evo 8 diff update.
Well I thought I would update on the diff.
We installed a front Quaife diff center.I had to get a work mate to machine a new bushing for inside the hemisphere. as the old diff took it out. Well all's well 10k km's later. We have just installed a Tomei turbo kit from frsports. A bigger job than I first expected. That under tray. Wow I just can't get to liking those dam plugs.
Changed the engine oil and coolant at the same time.
Car has 45k km's on it now. Going to change the cam and balancer belts next along with the fuel pump. Then look at having the ECM tuned.
Well that's it for now. I can go and work on my motorbikes while my son is out driving (wrecking) around.
Be safe
