Transfer Case whine? Options?

Hi guys, short story: looking to buy an evo 05, finally, but it has the death whine
The car whines only when in gear + some throttle. The sound is progressive too, gets louder as the RPMs go up. When off the throttle, the car does not whine, or in neutral.

The sound is coming from the back of the car tho, like the rear differential.
Can that be making the noise?

Also, what are the options in fixing this? I know shep trans rebuilds these, but that's about it.

What are the costs of labor and parts too?

Thanks guys!

If it's the death whine, it would whine all the time, on and off throttle. If it sounds like it's coming from the rear, it could be the rear diff. I would drain the rear diff first to see if any shavings or chunks come out before considering more expensive options. If the oil is silver (from metal shavings) and there's chunks coming out, then yeah, you might have to investigate it. If nothing, try adding new fluids in the diff to see if it goes away.

The seller said he has investigated the sound and its probably the rear differential like you said. He said he changed the fluids too, but the sound doesn't go away.

So if its the transfer case, it needs to whine with the throttle on and off?
If its the rear diff, it whines only when throttle is applied correct?

Does it sound like this? It should be very loud since you're sitting right next to the tc and it should still whine, even after throttle. Maybe not as loud of a whine when on throttle but it should still whine when off.

Got the same problem. But the tcase fluid was very clean after the car having the whine, the rear diff fluid had some metal in it
Anybody knows why?

It progressively gets worse, at first mine only did this lightly and around 4k rpms and only on the gas. 20k miles later it was just like the video.

Progressively gets worse. Mine has it now, only at 50-60 mph and on throttle. Once it starts it's over. Only a matter of time when it goes. Shep and jacks both do the rebuild. 3 stages to choose from. Stage one is oem ring and pinion 1000 bucks, stage 2 is hardened ring and pinion 1500, stage 3 is custom billet ring and pinion for like 2500 I think. Shipping to them is like 60, they send an infused box with lable. So far I found that you can remove it on your back and save like 600 bucks or take it to a shop. Price varies of course but around me, evo specific shops charge 600 plus fluids. Hope that helps, I've been researching a lot, just saving money now.

I got the whine noise after a track day. all the researching that I have been done is all pointing to the Tcase problem. is the rear diff may causing the same whine as well?

Hey guys, OP here, so i drove the car again, and here are the results:

Throttle + in gear = whine
No Throttle + in gear = no whine
No throttle + no gear = whine, basically when the car is moving and not in gear it still whines if you are doing more than 30mph

Doesn't whine any other time

Still points to tcase? or maybe rear diff?

Thanks for the help guys
