How to build a 4G64 for an EVO 8/9

I hope this thread gets sticky'd so other members do not have to perform 12 hours of research and calling shops to figure out how to do this swap.

What you will need:
4G64 block
stock evo crank shaft
156mm rods

This equals a 2.1L

If you use the 4G64 crank and rods, obviously this is a 2.4L.

Piston selection form. PLEAE READ CAREFULLY. There is a 4G64 for EVO 4-9. Then there is the DSM 4G64 with the 4G63 head. The DSM is not for our builds!!

The 4G64 section is wrong for the EVO 4-9. The head CC is incorrect and will change the compression ratio..

http://www.wiseco.com/Catalogs/Sport.../MiniMitsu.pdf

Below are all the vehicles that use the 4G64 block:

Applications

2000-2005 Mitsubishi Eclipse
1999–2003 Mitsubishi Galant
2003 Mitsubishi Outlander
1989–1991 Hyundai Sonata
1998-2005 CHRYSLER SEBRING
1998-2005 DODGE STRATUS

It looks like there were 2 versions of the 2.4 that went into the chrysler vehicles, check for the 4G64 stamping on the block. The link is below.

The stratus 4 door newer body style has the chrysler block and the 2 door had the 4G64 block. I found this out at the junk yard comparing the vehicles.

There have been threads on what belt to use. IE 4G63 and 4G64.

The EVO 9 belt was preferred due to it being reinforced with kevlar.
I was not able to find any one thread that said what Buschur or MAP uses.

4g64 mitsu dohc t belt # MD182292
4g64 gasket
thpartsbin.com, sku: FP26172PT

Felpro PermaTorqueMLS $34

Head gasket wise, you can use the 4G64 MLS gasket or machined 4G63 gaskets. The issue is that the 4G63 gasket will overhang into the combustion chamber causing hot spots and potential leaks.

The water pump needs to be modified or you need to use an adaptor plate. AMS does not make the modified water pump anymore according to Buschur. The next best thing is to purchase the one from MAP. They have the lowest price that comes with a gasket that I could find. This adapter plate allows you to utilize your 2.0L water pump for your 2.4L block build. The link is below.

http://www.maperformance.com/maperfo...p-10-1073.html

The reason you need a spacer/ modded pump is because the front cooling passage on a 2.4 block is slightly different. With a stock evo pump part of the passage is exposed and water will leak. The spacer just gives the evo pump a footprint like a regular 2.4 pump, which can also be achieved by welding/modding the evo pump.

Another pump that works is a 2003 Outlander pump. But it has to be 2003. Only year they came dohc 2.4 with 1 aux belt. GMB brand. Since prices change everyday, you can google search 2003 outlander water pump and click on the shopping tab. I have found them from 30-80 bucks shipped.

A 4G64/2.4 pump on a 4G64/2.4 block will not line up with the EVO/4G63 waterpipe, pulleys, etc

For the guys that have the EVO 9 head with MIVEC, you will need to modify the oil supply line or buy a relocation kit. A link below for the MAP line.

http://www.maperformance.com/map-miv...-evo-mofl.html

Now onto the timing part. This was the most extensive research I have performed. I am still having a hard time doing the timing with the different belts (4G63 or 4G64). This was a quote I found, "Advance if you use 64 belt retard if you use 63 belt." I hope someone can clarify this.

A great link from AMS is below. This is on the slight modifications that need to be performed to make everything fit.

http://www.amsperformance.com/instru...llPictures.pdf

Also, below are more pictures of timing marks I have found.

All the timing marks will line up. After the marks line up, I checked the cams. They were 3.4 degrees off or retarted. So with the adjustable gears, you will need to advance the cams by 3.4 degrees. I think the 3.75 was a ball park number. Advancing them would be turning them counter clockwise or towards the intake.

Onto the oil squirters. I found a few threads that you can machine and tap the block for the location of squirters or you can not install them. I have seen a few 800+WHP EVOs without them.

Below is the picture of the bolt that needs to be trimmed on the outlnder waster pump to fit the evo 8 alternator bracket to the water pump.

If any shops or individuals have performed this install, please let me know if I missed anything. Also, please send pics or more info on the belts and timing.

Great info. Ive built a few 2.4's and came up with couple helpers. First the whole retard -3.75 is a ballpark. I had my builder degree actually off the cam card and use a degree wheel. And it came out different then 3.75 with the 4g63 belt.
Second no need for a water pump spacer there are oem pumps that bolt right on and work great. Just my 2¢

Do you have a part number for the bolt on OEM pump?

Question.

im confused, why do people use the 4g64 engine? What im getting is your using a 4g64 short block and turning it into a 2.4lr? Can you do that to a 4g63?

Im also looking into the 2.4LR setup but didnt know you used a different block. Anyone with with a better understanding chime in and tell me (and maybe a few others) whats going on here.

from what i read is people are selling the 4g63 2.0 engine and buying the 4g64 and building a 2.4LR ?

I personally went with a 2.4 for cost reasons. 2.0 blocks only came on the evo. They are getting harder and harder to find and when you so, they are costly. Map for example charges $1200 core charge if you don't send them a usable 4g63 block and crank. They only charge $750 for the 4g64. Awd sells a 64 block and crank for $500. The 64 blocks and cranks can be found in junk yards for even less. If you blow up your 64, replacement blocks are easier to find and cheaper to replace.

To your other questions: lr2.4 is in a 64 block. It uses a "better" rod to stroke ratio. Closer to a 2.0 rod to stroke ratio. I believe it is so there is less side loading the pistons on the cylinder walls. Someone correct me if wrong.
