Need help or suggestions solving problem on evo 9
I have a Evo 9 with the following mods:
Built block
Blance shafts removed
Kelford 272s /supertech valve springs
FIC 1650s tuned on e85
Double Pumper
FP Red (fresh rebuild from FP)
Invidia o2 housing
3" turbo back exhaust
Synapse UICP/LICP
Synapse BOV
Injen intake
GM 3 port
Hallman Pro mbc
Milspec throttle body o-rings
I will try to keep this concise. I got my car tuned to 36psi on e85 with the fp red. After picking up the car from tuner on my first pull the turbo seized up.
The turbo was taken off and sent to FP where it was determined guy I bought it from rebuilt it at some local shop and they did not use FP bearings, one of which failed. Sent it in to FP and got a rebuild.
Received fp red from FP and threw it back on car with same map from tuner. Nothing else changed and the car won't make 36lbs of boost. It won't go over 30 psi now. It hits 30lbs and holds it to red line.
Smoke boost leak test was performed and only leak was at throttle body. Milspec orings put in. Tried new Hallman Pro and didn't make a difference. Car has no codes being thrown and has a fresh oil change.
I am at a loss at what the cause could*be and am hoping there is someone on here who can help me determine what to check or why this could be happening?

the MBC wasn't touched at all? Have you pulled any logs to check your AFRs? i would double check the mbc and get some logs going. Also may want to take it back to the tuner...
Side note I have not had a ton of success with smoke testing my car. I think pressure testing it is better to find leaks. Least it was for me.

Thanks for the replies guys. Yes the tuner actually did make a new map for the car after the turbo install and still could not get the boost over 29lbs. Air fuels are fine throughout the power band and at idle. I am going to call FP and ask why it wouldn't make over 29psi, if there are any reasons the turbo itself would be limited.

Did you adjust the MBC? Is your gauge reading correctly?

The tuner had a boost gauge from the dyno hooked up. Mine only goes to 30psi. FP just repaired the turbo they put it back to FP Red specs.
As for the bov, if it was failing wouldn't it fail during the whole boost ramp up?

Rotate MBC adjustment knob all the way out(-) counterclockwise to full soft. Do a WOT run in 3rd or 4th and note the peak boost level indicated on your boost gauge. This boost level is the actual wastegate spring pressure as set by FP after your turbo was reassembled and tested before it left their shop.
We don't actually know what actuator is on your turbo do we? However, we can pretty much assume that FP set spring pressure at 14-15#(FP 18# WGA), or possibly, even lower(stock IX WGA)..
