Approaching 30k miles on 2.3 FP BLACK DBB build

Cheers all. New member here. I picked up an Evo IX with a 2.3 fp black DBB 1400hd 9:1. Shep built trans/tcase. Approaching 30k miles on the bottom end. Around 5k miles on Buscher head. Car has always been on 93 with FIC injectors and a 255 tuned on speed density.

I admit I'm a n00b and need a bit of guidance here. I had a lower intercooler pipe pop off under boost and noticed a decent amount of oil coming out of the pipe. Shrug, fixed it. But notice the car is losing oil somewhere. Monitor the big double vented STM catch can and its grabbing a TON of straight oil. Like have to empty every 50 miles and refill car with oil ton. Catch can setup is -6an from two spots on head and also vented stm dipstick tube to the catch can. The STM can has the dual breathers on top and is square shaped with 3 ports.

Ran compression and leak down:

155 / 160 / 165 / 160

Leakdown @ 100psi: 4% / 7% / 1% / 3%

Capped oil dipstick vent and the third port on the catch can as well and ran the car about 50 miles under decent boost. Nothing in the catch can at all not even a drop...

Going to continue to monitor but any advice on my situation is appreciated.

At what rate should a properly functioning VTA catch can system collect gunk? I know it will fluctuate and will continue to monitor but wanted to know what to expect. Nothing after 50 miles of decent boost here and there potentially?

I've also been reading on the fp black dbb oil issues alot. How can you telll if the turbo is having issues? Would the oil in my lower IC pipe be an indicator of something weird?

Thanks for your time and help here. If you have any questions on specifics please let me know and I will reply. Looking forward to learning more about the platform. The car and motor is legend ;-)

Have you removed the air intake off the turbo to check if there is oil leaking from the compressor cover side?

Hi. I will give it a try.

On the catch can side with two 6an from head to catch can is that generally regarded as enough? I'm running around 26-27psi on 93

If you're WOT all the time, the catch can will obviously fill up. Now just cruising around staying out of boost you shouldn't have any oil in your catch can. Do you still have the pcv?

Here is a photo of the compressor side. Took off the 4in intake. Nothing in/around the turbo from what I can see but the intake has a light coat that looks pretty fresh.

Thoughts?

And not sure on PCV, I dont think its there, but how can you actually tell?

Is your catch can setup recirculated or vented? Your pcv valve is off the head near the intake manifold.

no PCV, there is a fitting from there to the catch can. Also one from the head on the intake side.

catch can is STM square can with 3 ports, has two breathers on top of it so VTA

Is that small amount of oil acceptable in the intake? it was a light film. Did not drip.

Nothing near turbo/pooling up outside of compressor housing or anything

i have the same setup as you I believe. The square one off the tranny? if your intake off the turbo is not being recirculated then the issue is what everyone else is having. The BB cartridge is letting oil bypass. That's why I went with a JB black vs a BB. I have no oil in my intake track or intercooler piping. After a hard day at the track, maybe six passes. I lose maybe 1/4 quart. And that's being on the heavy side, I prolly lose less.

Are you sure that's oil and not condensation?

I'd say as long as it's not pooling up on the inlet side you're fine.

So it seems the general consensus is that having to add oil and drain a catch can every 50 miles is normal on a DBB FB Black...

Seems a bit excessive.
