You should definatly use polish with a machine buffer.

I always hand wax, there are some spots that the buffer will skip or cannot get to.

I had a issue witht he paint on my car before I ever got the car. They buffed it to try to fix and it didnt resolve the issue. It had some scratches and plenty of swirls. It will require some swirl remover, go to NAPA and look at the 3m line of products. It may be cheaper to take it to a good shop either detail or a body shop that can buff the car. You can easily mess it up more with the buffer if you dont know what your doing. To get my car straight it first took, a wax remover from liquid gold(dish washing liquid works ok), a 3m cleaner wax.then a swirl remover from 3m for dark colored cars. After that 3m Finesse it compound to polish the car, then 3m hand glaze (this stuff works good to fill in small scratches) then 3m show car wax. I now have a pretty much flawless finish. NXT is good wax for getting out light water spots etc. and leaving a decent film to protect the paint and a good shine, However it dosent fill scratches well and it dosent remove some water spots and it wont touch swirls. It works too easy to actually work any paint, it's simply a touch up wax. KIT carnuba in the can is still probably one of the best for protection and removing surface contaminants in the process. But its a pain in the a$$ to get off.

Ive detailed cars for a while and i'll resort to doing it myself. I've decided to go with the 3m combo and ill probably switch off between hand wax and buffer, just to see which outperforms the other.

Thought hand wax would be the best since you can wipe/swipe horzonitally to prevent swirls? They mentioned something like that on motorweek.
