Dank smell coming from heater vents

Anyone else have a weird smell coming from the vents? Not happening when AC is on, just heat and cool. Not a burning a smell or anything like exaust or clutch just smells like standing water or dampness. Changed air filter inside and out.

If it smells like anti-freeze, then you have a leaky heater core. If you don't know what it smells like, open your radiator overflow reservoir and get a good whiff.

It's probably from condensation building up remaining stagnant inside your HVAC system from running your AC. Clean out the system with bleach water. Its an easy 2 hour job. After that whenever you run your AC, turn the AC off but leave the fan running for like the last 10 minutes of your trip. This will let the condensation evaporate. you can actually see it coming out in the air, the air looks misty. The air will still be cool too so its not like youre going to overheat and be miserable for the last 10 min of your drive.

My 240 SX got that smell. I believe it's from water getting down in the cowl area and becoming stagnant, possibly growing mold. I tried everything I could think of to kill it and couldn't. Dumping degreaser into the cowl, dumping mildew remover in there, taking the cowl panel off and wiping it out with a rag, pressure washing it. Nothing worked.

I would recommend using a BG product called "frigi-fresh". You spray it into the cabin air intake and it kills the mold/mildew than grows inside and smells like you described. It's usually $7-10 for a small can. -Gabe
