Mitsubishi sees U.S. sales up in September

Reuters / September 26, 2005

DETROIT (Reuters) -- Mitsubishi Motors Corp. said on Monday that its U.S. sales will rise in September for the second consecutive month after about two years of decline.

"We think we are in the turnaround mode right now," Dave Schembri, executive vice president of sales and marketing for the Japanese automaker's U.S. operations, said in giving the forecast for the sales increase. He made the comments on the sidelines of an event where the company was promoting its new Raider mid-sized pickup truck.

Mitsubishi's U.S. sales rose 2 percent to 10,945 vehicles in August, up from 10,721 a year before. The results, which represent the company's first sales monthly increase in two years, were not adjusted for the extra selling day last month. When adjusted, August sales actually showed a 1.8 percent decline.

The expected lift in sales this month should come mainly from the redesigned Eclipse car, which was launched this summer, Schembri said.

Mitsubishi, Japan's only unprofitable automaker, has said it is on track toward recovery after a litany of problems, including a scandal involving the cover-up of recalls and a sharp slowdown in U.S. and Japanese sales.

Last year, its U.S. sales dropped 37.1 percent to 161,609 units -- the lowest in 15 years and less than half what it sold just two years before. Its U.S. market share fell one half a percentage point to 1.0 percent. U.S. sales are down 29.6 percent year-to-date.

Schembri blamed the sales decline so far on the company's decision to move away from low-margin daily rental business.

The sales and marketing chief, who joined the company in February from Mercedes-Benz USA, said the automaker's new incentive program -- one year's worth of free gasoline with its 2005 model-year vehicles in the United States -- is off to a great start.

The company had to start the program, which was originally planned to begin last Friday, a day early because consumers were showing up at dealerships asking for it, Schembri said.

Under the program, which runs through the end of October, all buyers will receive prepaid debit cards, worth between $1,500 to $2,500, that can be used for gasoline at most retail locations.

Schembri, however, declined to say if Mitsubishi would extend the offer to 2006 model-year vehicles. Mitsubishi Motors is about 13 percent owned by DaimlerChrysler AG.
