Evo 8 or Evo 9?
hi I'm planing on buying an evo8 gsr or evo9 gsr both JDM and six speed, since they look pretty much the same on exterior and interior apart from the recaro seat (evo9 has the leather trim?) I just want to know which one handles better and performance better? Is the ayc and acd same on both?
is the weight about the same on gsr model? What is the different for the mivec turbo engine and non mivec turbo engine?
Ive spot a 2003 evo8 done 101,000kms, have power fc, hks272 cams, aftermarket intake pipe, intercooler pipe, aftermarket dump pipe, hks exhaust hks pod filter, hks twin plate clutch, apexi boost controller. Or 2005 evo9 done 92,000kms have exhaust and hks pod filter (apart from them it's stock), exterior and interior on both car pretty much same 8/10 tidy.
Will be greatly appreciated if someone can give me some advice thanks.
The evo8 probably been driven fast a lot but it's only have 1 owner in NZ and it's got sunroof that's what I love about it since that is very rare on JDM models evo. The evo9 is about $2k usd more expensive and have 4 owner. I'm in New Zealand by the way

mivec doesnt seems to be the selling point for ne at all when i purchased my evo vs buying an evo 9 GSR. what i dont like about the evo 9 is there front bumper and that leather trim that everyone like , why ? usually leather deteriorate over time and that need work, and sure mivec is cool and all but that only create more expensive parts and less interchangeable between 8 and 9 engine wise.. so i go with the 8.

the fact that you are buying a car outside of the US, it is difficult to tell you which car is better for the money figures you threw out. If it were here in the states, I could give you a more definite answer. Since I just went through the same thing here in the US, it came down to how much I was willing to spend for as unmolested car as I could get for a reasonable amount of money.
So in the US as you may know we only have 1 Evo 9 and that was the 2006 model year. All the rest of the CT9As are 2003 to 2005 Evo 8s. As I started my search about 6 months ago, the prices were all over the place for both 8 and 9s, this depended on mileage, as close to stock as possible, accidents (I wanted one that had never had one) and preferably buy from a private seller and not a dealer. So you have to ask yourself what is important to you. I prefer the 9 but I've had an 8 so the way I saw it was, either pay less money for an unmolested car and no accidents or get an older one 03-04 with higher mileage had been at least taken care of (this of course is getting harder and harder to find the older CT9As get). I also wanted a Rally Red one so that made it even more difficult.
If you prefer the look of an 8, and Mivec is not something you need to have then it makes the decision even less difficult. Asking people here which car to get is pointless. I would rather get what I want and ask folks here instead what they prefer in a car if they were buying right now.
Again to me, NO ACCIDENTS, AS STOCK AS POSSIBLE, and Red where my 3 priorities. I did not care if I ended up with an 8 or 9 but I did "prefer"if it was a 9 but wouldn't of lost sleep over it.
Get the car you want and one that is mechanically sound as possible.. you will be much happier in the end. Good luck
oh year.. JDM Evos have AYC which none of our cars have that here in the US...here is link to a thread that explains it in detail.

Evo 9, I just bought one three weeks ago. Personally, in the long run...I would say the evo 9 is worth it if you have it. I don't believe in 2005 the evo 9 was produced, that is an evo 8. Correct me if I am wrong? 2006-2007 is the evo 9. The 2007 being the Japan ONLY version. The evo 9 has more to the car, that is worth paying the extra money. It is also a more rare car as the price for the 9's are quite a bit higher. I paid 27k for mine out the door, with 64k miles. It is in mint condition.

Just my personal opinion, I have a 9, and looks wise, I like it over the 8. But most of the cosmetic stuff can be upgraded on the 8 anyways (headlights, tails, bumper covers, seats)
I autocross my car and hoping to get into road racing someday. I find the ACD to be useless, and I actually ran worse times in the rain trying to switch it to gravel (same on the street). I read somewhere that racing Evo's don't have ACD/AYC, so if I had to get another Evo, it would probably be a 2003 or 2004 with upgrade cosmetic items I mentioned above. Plus, I have the GSC2 cams and unlike the 8, there is almost no lope haha.

Try autoxing an VIII with it's open front diff. Let me know how well that does.

All other things being equal, stock for stock the 9 is better. If your planning some minor mods the 9 is still better, but the more you mod the less it actually makes a difference. Mivec doesn't really matter once you have cams and adjustable cam gears. The better 9 turbo doesn't matter once you start upgrading the turbo. So if you are planning on staying stock / mostly stock the 9 is the better bet.
