My EVO IV 500HP Build
Hi Everyone think i'm posting in the right place, i decided its never to late to post a build thread. I have owned my evo 4 for 10 months and over the last 6 months have been building it into what i hope to be a 500whp street car and daily.
Here is a pic of what it looked like when i got it
Then i made the stupid decision of going and getting some work emotion xd9 chrome that are 17x9 i think, well stupid decision far to wide
Then I went and brought some wold s1p 18x8 that look alot better
Now onto the build i guess that the wheels are sorted
So one day i started my car and poof was blowing a ton of smoke i was worried as anyone would be with there pride and joy burning oil, I went and got a compression test and they put a camera down somewhere to confirm i has in fact done my rings and cracked a piston in half haha.
So i took her home because i didn't know if i wanted to get a rebuild or sell her as evo 4s are very common here in NZ and to be honest nobody likes them, but i did infact this was my second evo 4 and i loved them. I came to the conclusion i wanted to rebuild here so of to the engine builder i decided i wanted to do a cheap rebuild and forge it as a 2.0L so away it begun, with the pistons, rods being upgraded with aftermarket ones and the crankshaft replaced with a new stock ones, block all prept and everything else done on a rebuild etc, i got a stage 2 clutch and lightened flywheel put in there.
After a month or so i got here back happy as could be, running here in. Now the first issue was after about 800ks the wastegate actuator went as they do. Replaced that, then 1 week later the frost plugs blew while i was driving haha, coolent everywere. So i got the thing home filled it with water and dropped it of at my mechanic. So apprently on the rebuild they never did them -_- which is stupid.
So it was there for about a week getting sorted, i got her back and he assured me everything would be ok.... Famous last words, a week later my engine started playing up it couldn't hold revs it would die when the clutch was put in "WTF" so i went back to my builder fed up as hell, left it with him. A week later i herd back letting me know it has crankshaft walk as what happens with evo 4s. He told me the clutch was putting to much pressure on the thrust bearing, I checked it out and they were toast and so was the block and crank luckily the pistons and head were fine. So this time it had to be rebuilt again, at there cost thank god i decided it was time to make this motor stronger and decided to head online and look at what other people were doing and came to the conclusion i wanted to stroke me little evo 4.
So out the engine came, ditched the block, crank, bearing, and decided to ditch the pistons as i needed a different setup to stroke it. The parts that went in over the 2-3 month time it was there this time as follows.
-Evo 5 bottom end
-Manley forged stroker 100mm crank
-molnar H-beam rods
-Wossner forged pistons
-Arp head studs
-ACL main end and big end race bearings
-cometic head gasket
-Stage 1 port and polished head
-balance shaft removed
-dw300 fuel pump
-dw 1000cc injectors
-3" turbo back
-air con removed
-rocket cover crinkle coated
-carbon fiber cam gear cover
Probably other bits and pieces i forgot and she was now back on the road for run in,
She then was tuned to around 300whp on stock boost, limited by the fact it has 0 bolt ons haha.
I installed a evo 5 spoiler just cause i could lol
Also a gfb geforce 2 electronic boost controller
And a gfb deceptor pro bov that you can adjust
but she has been solid and never let me down since, so the time has come to do all the bolt ons here comes the money i have very little of lol
Here she sits as of 2 weeks ago
Of everything comes
time for a clean up
good as new
test fitting new intercooler with 3" inlet and outlet ports
shes very naked
started painting the intake manifold
New sinco manifold and 44ml tial gate and gaskets etc
New cams GSC power devision stage 2 stroker cams 274
New tomei cam gears
New s90 70mm throttle body
New garret t3/60-1 turbo, i decided to go with this because i wanted a small turbo for spool and this one has very good low end power and good top end aswell if tuned right
Manifold, turbo and gate are on along with a screamer pipe
How she looks as of this present day
New gear knob
Got an amp so i could get more out of the speakers and i also installed a tablet in my dash and ditched the head unit lol
I am waiting for some other parts to arrive but hopefull will be getting the new computer in a week or two and i will have the downpipe made and install the cams, gears, valve springs next week
as of now this is all i have

Nice car, im doing my own evo 4 at the moment and was wondering if you had many problems with rubbing on the 18 inch rims as i was looking at getting some rota grids for mine but if 18s are just a bit to big and cause lots or rubbing issues i will go for 17s. It would be good to hear what you though as it looks in the pics that you car is not really low (wheels tucking in guards) and your car looks about the height i want to have mine at.

you don't really want to push wider that 8 or else you will have issues with rubbing, i had 18x8.5 on my first evo 4 but stiff as hell suspension with bc coilovers and rubbed still a little. my 17x9 were **** to drive
How far are you along with your car?

Ok so over the last few days i have got a couple more things done, nothing major as i have not had the time.
Other than plasti dip I am in love with this stuff dupli color vinyl and fabric paint, it works like magic you can kinda figure out what it does :P haha. I have painted my roof lining soon to be carpet, seats and so on. it makes the car look like new i will post some pics of the roof lining when i get some.
Ok so i got some new bits and pieces i got my intake piping and silicon joiners 4" to the turbo no afm as i will be running a link ecu when i can afford it. upper and lower intercooler piping, got a flange welded on for the bov and there is my new poddy. I also got new radiator piping

Just started really, have engine out and just stiped it down and hope to start rebuilding it in the nexts few weeks but when i pulled the engine out i found that someone had put a evo7 engine in at some point so that was an unexpected bonus. Im not even close to buying wheels but im already thinking about it and wondering what will and wont fit haha. i want rota "grid r" but i think they only make them in 17" dia and 9" wide at there smallest so i might just have to settle for normal grids but then again buy the time i actually get around to buying wheels i might have changed my mind again haha

, you could of got 300+kw atw easy without pulling the engine apart to be honest, just the right bolt ons and cams, the block and head would handle it fine.
I only built my motor because it blew up on be twice haha and now that its nearly done strugling to find funds to finish it

I really like what you've done with the car. The evo 4 was the first evo I was introduced to because at the time they were popular in my home country. Have you thought of running the front fenders and rear flares from the evo 6 to allow yo to run a wider rim and tire?
Also, i think the dull tinted tail lights take away from how clean the car is.
