Wheel \ tire side wall question

OK i forgot how this goes but here is a example.

you have 1 8.0 width factory wheel and 1 8.5 width wheel on a factory size tire of 225/45/17.

Ok going from a 225\45\17 to a 235 or 245/40/17 would it make the side wall smaller or a bit higher. yeah obvious i said 45 to a 40 but using both widths from the top and wider tire.. what would the side wall look like? Higher or lower. I just remember something about even if you go down a size in sidewall and wider or smaller width tire\wheel it changes sidewall differently.

Explain because i am obviously clueless

Example: 225/45-17

1) 225 is the nominal width of the tire in millimeters.
2) 45 is the aspect ratio - how tall the sidewall is relative to the width of the tire (in this case, the sidewall height is 45% of the tire's width).
3) 17 is the diameter of the wheel that this tire would fit.

In this example, the sidewall measures 101.25mm.
A 235/40-17 would have a sidewall height of 93.6mm and the 245/40-17 would have a sidewall measuring 98mm.
Both would be shorter than the 225.

Wheel width does not affect the tire's height (well, actually it would in fine measurements but we're not going there.)

First of all, the factory tires are 235/45 17s, not 225/45. As far as sidewall height goes, it's not necessarily the same for all brands of the same size. Your best bet is to look at the specs at Tire Rack. That will give you an overall diameter which will tell you the sidewall height. As far as how it works, it's something along the lines of width=first number (i.e. 235, 245...), sidewall=first number x second number as percent (i.e. 235 x 0.45). Therefore, increasing the width with the same profile will result in a taller sidewall. Hope this helps.
