Braking causes steering wheel to shake?

Car is basically new, 5500 miles on the odometer. Whenever I brake, the steering wheel shakes... the harder I brake, the harder it shakes. Going through the break in period, I never braked hard, pretty much never braked hard for the first 750 or so miles. Anyone else have this problem?

sounds like your rotors might be warped

Rotors don't exactly warp ( http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp...rakedisk.shtml )but what may have happened is there may be excess brake pad deposits on certain parts of your rotor. Try the bedding in you brake technique to see if it fixes the problem.

basic term is warpage and from the way you describe it, I'm not sure if rebedding would work. But definately give it a try.

did you rotate the tires if so someone over torque the wheels and yes rotors can warp

yes, but they normally don't, and turning them with pad deposits is only gonna help til you do it again.

I get it all the time after track days, simply bed the pads back in and clear off all the garbage still on the rotor.

People just hear the statement "oh they're warped" and pass it on.

i m having the same problem (steering wheel shakes when braking at 65mph+, once speed comes down to 60 or below the shakes go away)

so why only occurs at high speed braking???

please enlighten me...thanks

It happens cause the rotors are spinning faster, so that uneven part (deposits, warping whatever u wanna call it) passes through the caliper faster and you feel the vibration. Also AFAIK when braking at higher speeds the calipers apply more pressure to the rotors than at low speed.

he didn't warp a thing. Stop now, please.

Everybody and their brother thinks that a pulse in a rotor means its warped.

it's not.

it's excessive pad buildup and uneven pad transfer. Bed them in again, and you're fine.

I experienced this at my last track day. It was really only happening when braking after the main straight, which I would come down > 110mph easily. It bothered me, but it never happened anywhere else on the track.
I tried to brake hard (like bedding the brakes) during a drive to get gas and everything felt solid. I was hoping there was a chunk somewhere that got caught up and it got thrown out.
Unfortunately it came back after a few laps. I'm wondering if this was because I was still on the stock brake pads? I wouldn't say I was pushing the brakes, but I know the stock pads aren't ideal for multiple events right?

I replaced the front pads, as planned, with a set of PF's recently.
