Getting ready to install my springs and I heard that you need a special wrench to remove the springs from the front struts because the nut is recessed down on the shaft, has anyone done this without this special tool? If I do need this tool what is the proper name for it so I can go pick one up.

its called a spring compressor. go to autozone,advanced auto, etc. and for 20 bucks you can get it. its best to use one or when you take that specific bolt off. ill post some pics and a link for you to follow for the install.

No, I know you need to use a spring compressor to compress the spring. I am talking about the shaft nut on the strut. It is recessed down so you can't get a normal wrench on the shaft to keep the shaft from spinning when you go to losen the nut. I would normally use an impact gun and not worry about holding the shaft but Mitsubishi suggests not using an impact gun for some reason.

I read the link provided but it doesn't say exactly what specialty tools to buy or where to get them. I'm also going to install Espelir GT springs in the very near future.

I was thinking about buying a lowering springs for my evo instead of coilover. I heard you have to buy a rear sway bar so you won't loose your ride. Is that true?

You don't have to buy a rear sway bar when you get springs.

It helps the car handle better overall, but the car will still handle better with just springs. As long as they are good springs (Swift, Works, etc.)

Alright, looks like I'm going to proceed with the install without any specialty tools. It also seems like tightening the top nut on the strut is more damaging with an impact than removing it. In one of the threads it says to tighten to 33 lb/tr, so I can see how hitting with an impact might be a problem.

i just used a normal socket (dont remember the size). but be sure to loosen it some before loosening the bolts on the upper perch mount. follow the evomoto guide exactly and your install will come out perfect....at least mine did

yeah, you just have to crack that top front strut nut loose while the car is still on the ground and it won't spin, just like the evomoto write-up. just use a deep socket.
