RE-01 or Direzza Z1 vs. Nitto’s NT-01
How significant is the difference between the RE-01 or Direzza Z1 vs. Nitto’s NT-01? I’d like to get more traction on track days, but I don’t think that I’m ready for full slicks or anything over 255 wide yet. My other options are the Toyo’s RA-1 or the BF-R1. TIA.

There was another thread like this in the past few days - You can't really compare an R-Compound tire to street tires. R-Comp all the way. NT01's are a great option for the track. I can vouch for them personally.
They're a step up (aka newer design) than the Toyo RA1's which everyone knows used to be the 'track ****' of a tire for pretty much everything. The NT01's and Toyo R888's seem to be very close; so I can't help you choose the difference there.
A 255 will sit perfect on a 9" rim. There's several cheap/light/strong 17x9's you can get (5zigen, Enkei, Work) here and run a 255/40-17 w/o any fender rubbing - unless you're just plain slammed.

Ya the NT-01s are an Rcomp. Did you mean the NT-05? Thats the new tire from Nitto that BlackTrack had reviewed recently. He liked it over the RE-01R but has never run the Z1. If the NT05 slots in pricewise below the Z1, I will be getting a set of those next season. Ill post the link to his review in a sec.

I’m currently on stock suspension and will be going with coilovers soon, not looking to slam my car, just to make it handle better. The used set I’m eyeing is17x8.5 wheels with Nitto’s 245-45-17. Would a 45 tall tire be a problem with coilovers?

FYI: Nitto is owned by TOYO
I've got nitto 555RII's on my Z06. they are the same compond as the NT-01's, which is the same compound as the RA-1's. the only difference is the tread depth and design.
you could run the RII's as a daily driver tire on an EVO no problem. My buddy has the NT-01's on his R32 but only uses them on track since they are basically an R-comp tire.

The NT01 are horrible in the rain. Just HORRIBLE. Even at full tread depth I experienced four wheel hydroplaning at highway speeds. On an auto-x course they provide adequate traction in the wet, provided the course has no standing water of any kind.
From my experience, the Z1's are the best overall tire, based on a combination of all-weather performance, treadwear, and cost. The NT01 however is the winner hands down if you are willing to sacrifice tread life, operating temps, and weather conditions.

... had you read more closely you would see he is not ready for full slicks and he implies the car will still be driven on the street. His car is not a track only automobile. He is comparing an R-comp tire to two street tires, albeit very high performance ones. They are almost akin to comparing apples to oranges, but not quite. It really should be noted that the NT-01s are high wear and worthless in wet conditions. I do not see why this information is not relevant.

The two high end street tires won't even be close to the same grip as the NT01, R1, or RA1. The difference is HUGE!!! No matter how good the street tire it won't be as good as an R-compound.
It is a no brainer than the R-compound with wear faster. But for the price they last long enough.
