18x9 wheels - 245/40R18 vs 265/35R18 Star Specs

I'm looking at some 18x9 +35 RE30s and got to thinking about tire size. I was always under the impression that 265/35R18 is perfect for 18x9 but I saw a post recently from one of the big road racers on here that 9 inches wide isn't enough to make a 265 really work like it should. On the other hand, some guys run 255s on the factory 8 inch wheels, so I'm not sure what to think.

Which would be the better choice of Star Spec for this wheel size? Car is daily driven. It will see some track time but probably not much. More autocross if anything.

245/40R18 advantages (correct me if I'm wrong):
- Price
- More sidewall to protect wheels (Midwest streets can be awful)
- Larger diameter = lower revs on highway (slightly)

265/35R18 advantages:
- More grip (is this true for a wheel that is "only" 9 inches wide?)
- Looks meaner
- Less weight (guessing)

Thanks guys.

I don't know many using a 265 on a 9" wheel w/out some type of rubbing issues. For dd/street use I'd stick with the 245 option.

I run a 275 on a 9.5 +22 and only had to roll the rears. I think a 265 on the 9 would be perfect and shouldn't rub

Im running 255/35/18 star specs on 9" rim. No rubbing at all. 255 is probably better suited for a 9" rim than a 265, imo.

I run 265/35R18 on an 18x9 - required rear fender roll. However rim/tire fitment is perfect for street use, IMO, as the tire protrudes slightly past the rim, giving minor protection against curb rash. It is also the same diameter as the stock tire, so the speedo stays the same. I also track on 265/35R18s, however I doubt I'm a good enough driver to even notice the difference between a 245 vs 265 for the same compound.
