2017 - Street Tire Options

This stems from this article I read posted on a local SCCA facebook page - TIRE TECH /// 2017 STREET TIRE OVERVIEW.

Personally, for the last 6 years I have used the Hankook RS-3's for daily work and Auto-X, but if the RS-4 is an improvement count me sold. They are already listed at Tire Rack with an availability around the time I pull my winter wheels off, but the posted diameters seem to be a bit smaller than the RS-3's.

Example 255/40/17
RS-3 - 25" Diameter
RS-4 - 24.8" Diameter

TL;DR - Not all inclusive

The RS4 got expensive. It is not longer the "cheap" option. So I would hold out for some tire tests.

You must source your tires at a lower price point than I do. Looking back at my last 4 purchases, the price per tire for the RS-4 seems appropriate. All my data below includes shipping + installation.

RS-4 (255/40/17)
2017 - 738.72 (184.68) - Tire Rack

RS-3s (255/40/17)
AUG15 - 689.52 (172.38) - Tire Rack
APR14 - 756.08 (189.02) - Tire Rack
FEB13 - 718.78 (179.70) - Discount Tire
MAY12 - 723.30 (180.82) - Discount Tire

Thanks for posting that. Im praying the new Ziii's are as fast or faster than the re71's but it seems they probably won't make it stateside for another year. If that's the case I'll be picking up for Re71's.

Among many other variables, limited tire sizing is a giant pet peeve of mine and unfortunately a lot of those tires have limiting sizing which for obvious reasons is a total deal breaker.

For example I think the Rival S would be a better tire for us evo folks relative to the Re71 yet they offer like 4 different sizes lol so Bridgestone is the only option.

My "race" wheels with NT01's are 17's. Street wheels are 18's for that sex appeal. Still run a 200tw tire on the street since the car isn't a daily.

Oooh. Gotcha. My street tires are three-year-old Nitto 555s. Cheapest I could find, in a pinch.

I've accepted I will get approximately 14k miles no matter what happens out of my RS3s as a daily driven tire. Texas, Missouri, Florida, all the same. Now that I can switch over to my winter Pirelli's, I'm happy to get 2 calendar years of use

I have a feeling my car is used much more on the street than yours.

The RE11's on my car are currently at 2 years, and ~12-15k miles. still have about 5-6/32's on them. I suspect the inside edge will cord before the tires actually wear out though.

No doubt. Plus, I drive around town like a grandma. I can only get first to spin from a roll. I chalk it up to the tires being so old.

ill be following this closely. i signed up for gridlife street mod class at mid ohio in april, which is probably the WORST possible time to get my hands on a set of tires.

ive tracked on rs3's and z2's. i liked the rs3 better honestly...but i have been out of the street tire loop for like two years.

The R-S3 had better all-out grip, but the Z2 was more responsive. I think it definitely came down to preference when it came to AutoCross. No question at the road course, though.

yeah even with the soft sidewall i felt the rs3 was faster, car always felt "up on the tire" with the z2's if that makes any sense. This will be the first time i go full bore time attack honestly, and ill be pushing whatever tire i use to the max, so my gut says rs3 but...

I priced out a set of the cook RS4 and they were cheaper than my new RE71R in 255/40-17. I'm excited to see the outcome but I noticed a lot of grooves in the tread compared to the other top tires and maybe the new RS4 is shooting for top rain tire ?
