Bench flash ecu voltage

My power supply claims to be 12v dc and on my multimeter it's putting out 16.5v. Is this too much for the ecu? I don't want to fry the ecu and the openport. Help please, thanks!

Update...I decided to test this system with the openport only and voltage has dropped 1v to 15.5v instead of the original 16.5v. Still wondering if I can safely hook up the ecu to it at the same time without frying the ecu. I'm sure the voltage will drop after it is plugged in with the openport. Scared of the initial spike from plugging it in and harming the ecu. I'm not that knowledgeable in the electrical dept. Anybody got some input?

Don't they see more than that straight from the alternator when the car is running or is there some kind of regulator connected in between?

Yeah I thought it's at like 14v, same as the battery level logged while the car is running?

I have a voltmeter nearly always connected to the cigarette lighter , reading up to 14.8V sometimes.
An open circuit voltage of 16.5V is a bit too high IMHO.
If you can put a picture of your opened bench power supply we can spot a trimmer to adjust the output open circuit voltage (usually there is one)

I currently unable to show the inside of this Power Supply...(Its being stupid and not opening up)

I Changed to the ^ Power Supply and starting from 14.3v down to 14.0-14.1v with the OpenPort.

Could this be safe to use now? 14v to me is a much better output than 15-16v+ to try to flash the ECU without frying.

Aaron is 12.7v+ something you have seen first hand fry/harm the ECU?

I would be comfortable using that new power supply at 14v. I am positive it will drop at least another half a volt or so when it powers up the ECU

^^^ I agree : I had my ECU flashed while charging the battery with one of those smart electronic chargers that stops @ 13.8V so very close to the 14V mark.

Small Update...

The bench flash worked without frying the ECU. Currently working on the TephraMod V2 issue now. Ended up at 13.9v while everything was connected.

Thanks Everyone for the help.
