Not sure what you define as cheap, but a good ACT Clutch/Flywheel combo will be in the $800-$900 range depending on what setup you get. It's too early to tell how my clutch is going to do, it sure does grab though, still doing the break in.

How hard is a clutch to replace on your own?

After getting my clutch installed by the dealership at a discounted rate due to the stocker giving me such problems at only 4k miles, the tech that installed it said he had to take quite a bit more off compared to the Evo 8/9's. I think the going rate was $500-600 so expect something in the $700-800 range for a X clutch replacement. It could be that once more installs are done it will get easier but tackling it yourself would be a difficult job without a lift from what I gathered.

The ACT 6 puck is a bit of a challenge to drive on the street, but I'm starting to get used to it. Low speed maneuvering in my driveway is kind of a pain since the engagment can chatter quite a bit if you don't push the clutch in fast enough to counter it. I guess if you plan on staying with the stock turbo then the HDSS setup would likely be the way to go. Since I planned on eventually going to a 400 whp turbo setup I tried the 6 puck HDG6 sprung disc. From what I've read using the XT pressure plate would possibly result in high rpm lockouts and I didn't want to risk that.

Hey guys I just thought I'd speak out since I just had this done. I definitely wouldn't recommend doing this on your own (although I don't know your experience level). My x mechanic (shout out to Speedy @ Racing Results) said that ams recommends the exedy stage 2. So that's what I got, here's pics:

Stock exploded clutch

exedy stage2

The new clutch feel is a little difficult for me to get used to it grips nicely. The shops other evo 8,9, etc. owners they said that the act has a lot stiffer clutch pedal feel, like that diesel calf syndrome. The exedy is stiffer to push then stock but not bad at all. Like I don't get tired from driving it, the material on the four pucks makes for a metal on metal grinding sound that a little tough to get used to so just expect that as well. This is my first upgraded clutch and I'm still breaking it in so if anyone can give me advice on them that would be cool. I hope this was helpful, good luck in your decision.
Oh yea the price was 600 for the clutch.
