Snow Tire: 245/40 vs 235/45

Hey guys,

Need to pick up a set of snow tires and need to pick a size. What are you guys running? I've read that stepping down a size (245 to 235) can help performance in the snow, but I'd like to get some confirmation on this.

And if the 235 is the tire to go with, should I get the 235/40 or 235/45? 235/45 I'm guessing would have a rolling diameter closer to that of the stock tire, but that's just an assumption.

And I'll be mounting them on the stock rims if that matters.

I don't have personal experience with this, I'll say that upfront. I think regardless a 245 or 235 snow tire will perform better than almost anything else on the road. Like you I have heard that the narrow width sinks into the snow more, rather than floating on top. Contact patch area doesn't really change but the shapes (narrower and longer) probably has something to do with it. At the end of the day I probably wouldn't get too hung up on it. I personally would just get the 245. Heck I drove the stock Advans for a Midwestern winter (probably wouldn't recommend).

i picked up a set of 235/40 blizzaks last winter and i love them. Great handling in dry and rain and when it came to light snow and ice they handled as expected. I am still waiting for a full fledged Nor-Eastern to really test these tires.

I have a set of 235/45 nokian hakkapeliitta r2s on my Evo and they rub ever so slightly at full lock on the fender liners. I'd suggest 235/40 for stock wheels.

I ran 245/40 Blizzak WS-80s last year with the North Eastern blizzard. I was out in 4-6" of snow (when it started) and loved every second of it. Those tires performed flawlessly, even when purposely hooning around with the GoPro. I just set to 'Snow' and turned traction control off.

Narrower the better for snow/ice traction. Its easier to evacuate debris from the front of the tire when the contact patch isn't as wide. We would recommend 235/40-18.

Yeah my friend also runs 245/40/18 blizzaks in winter on stocks and he loves them. They look super mean too.
