If you took a Jap-spec ECU, and bolted in a US-spec Evo, the car will not start!
I think he meant that if you took the base program from a JDM ECU, and flashed that program onto a USDM ECU, then you can have 30-40 bhp gains.
I'm not sure a stock JDM ECU could give you that kind of gain, but there are a lot of custom programs floating around that will give you 30-40 bhp with no other mod.
And by the way, the ECU reflash should be the last mod you do. It tunes the entire car to run with all the mods you have, and it's really expensive to do a reflash in the future. So pick all the parts you want, install them, then go do a reflash.

FYI, some people find the word “Jap” offensive. It is considered derogatory to the Japanese. Have some respect for the people who designed and built your EVO.
I believe the Japan has higher octane gas available to them. Maybe 97-98 octane? So most likely, the J-spec ECU runs more aggressive timing and leaner a/f ratios. I’d go w/ a custom flash that’s optimized for your car.

They may have higher posted octane levels, but the way they devise their octane levels is more lax then the American way. The formula escapes me at the moment, but its on every gas pump MON plus RON devided by two, or something. Plus, their gas has a lot more sulphur content then ours (or less?) which is why GDI works over there, but not here.
And yes, it is J-spec. Shortening Japan(ese) to three letters is offensive.

Thts opinion, the SAFC does not control timing, which is a VERY important part of tuning, but the safc is on the fly, while a flash is done every so often. Flash is more precise. AFC is more conveniant but certainly not as good, my opinion. But snce it cannot control timing, well......

True...but the fact that you can tune it in 500rpm increments and doesn't require $200 everytime you bolt something new on is a bit more effiecient...but the timing point is taken with much apprecaition. Thanks!

I guess that all depends on the shop. I went back and they did a FREEBIE for me, Dyno and all. Nest time it costs me $100, but see the value in getting a Dyno graph, a credible power increase based on past pulls on the same dyno, but that is just me.
