My exhaust fires flames, is it wrong?
Hello, I'm from Romania and I'm kinda new here. I have an Evo 9 with the following upgrades: Milltek exhaust, test pipe and downpipe, upper pipe with BOV HKS SSQ and EIDS. No resoft. I have the air/fuel gauge mounted on the pillar. And after 4000 rpm it shows that is running very rich. After 160 km/h, 96mph, when I take my foot off the gas it starting to blow flames from the exhaust. Is it wrong or is it ok? Fuel consumption raised a lot after the upgrades were mounted. Please respond and inform me if it is going to do something bad to the engine or not. Or give any suggestions. Much apreciated!

using hks recirc kit will not run richer as it does now? or is a better method to resoft? also, a lower intercooler pipe and an 02 housing will improve performance signficantly? please enlighten me

+1 above.. you are running rich with current set-up and your turbo with stock ECU wont be able to compensate without the flash.. I would recommend a flash now.. you seem to be far enough into it to warrant one.. or you're going to get more of that fire action.. welcome to the club..

oh yeah.. and the LICP and O2 will help, but with the IX you are running pretty well as it is with your current mods.. Significant... well that is relevant to what you are trying to gain.. maybe 7-15HP... just MHO from what I've seen from other folks and myself..

Thats the point.. It is either you get that loud PSST.. sound and loss performace/run rich.
Or you recirc the bov and gain performance, and not really loose to much of the nice sound.(You won't be disappointed.)
Anyhow, get a flash it is the best thing you can do for your car. Since you are in romania, I am not sure if they reflash it around there, but good luck.

Hi,
I'm also located in Romania (Cluj-Napoca) . I have the same Milltek Exhaust with the stock catalyst in place and the HKS BOV installed with the HKS EIDS. (I bought them and got them installed at Racing Nick, and I think that's where you got them as well).
The fires in the exhaust comes from a rich mix of fuel/air. The EVO 9 has a MAF sensor which means it counts the air before the turbo. If air is released after the turbo (in the case of a BOV between the intercooler and intake manifold) that air is not substracted out of the numbers by the ECU and there is a surplus of fuel getting into the engine. The HKS EIDS can be tuned to give more or less fuel (it has a small screw on it) take care however that it is very sensitive so change the positions slowly until you get to the optimum setting.
Another thing that might cause the fires are the sparks. I have installed colder plugs on the evo and I got this behaviour even without the hks ssqv and hks eids. I'm not sure about this one but from what I understood it is caused by the late fire given by the spark. Since they are shorter than stock ones, it changes a bit how the spark fire is beeing handled. It is ok when u're in full throttle, but when you lift the throtle things change. Can't argument this one.. It's just a "myth" someone told me it could be the case, without any proven records
What town are u into ? maybe we can go to a
