02 ES Catalytic Converter is shot
Using Engine Diagnostic tool myself and going to two shops its confirmed. My catalytic converter is not sending and needs to be replaced. My question do I need to spend all this money??? The car has 141,000 miles on it.
The car itself is driving fine. Great gas milage, peppy, its just the check engine light is on all the time.
Can this car's exhaust be 'straight piped'? Will this hurt the performance of the vehicle? Will it even work with this car? Some vehicles will not run without a catalytic converter.
Other option is to take the insides out the converters and reinstall them. Again, will a 2002 Lancer still run with this shortcut?
This was my fathers car, he died and its one of the things I've leftover from him. I've been quoted $700.00 to replace both converters and both sensors up and downstream from the converters.
Help.

Depending on where you're at, you won't pass emissions. No need to straight pipe the car. You'll still have the check engine light, and you still won't pass emissions. And you can't delete the cat that's built into the header... unless you get an aftermarket piece.

are you sure it isn't just the sensor?
I had a CEL, and it actually was just the sensor, replaced it with an ebay $18 special, 20,000 miles ago, and no issues since
if it is your cat, you are in MI, and they are really cheap for the federal not in CA or NY emissions standards
