Burning excessive oil.

Hello folks. I have my 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer that is 1,000 miles shy of 200,000 miles and it is burning oil pretty fast. It's burning a full quart at about 2,200 miles. Any suggestions on what I do? Engine rebuild? Add some sort of "oil treatment?"

I need ideas. It's not visibly burning oil, the exhaust doesn't smell, the underside of the car isn't wet. I need ideas.

If you're 100% that there's no external leak, try replacing the PCV valve and valve seals. The PCV is extremely easy, but the valve seals are tricky and I don't recommend it if you're not very confident in your abilities and have the correct equipment. You do not need to remove the camshaft, but you DO have to remove the rocker shaft, valve keepers, and springs, while applying compressed air to the cylinder via the spark plug hole to avoid dropping the valve into the cylinder. Not a job for the inexperienced.

I'd perform a leak down test before undergoing any major engine service. It'd suck to rebuild the head and have the bottom end go out in 2 months. 200k is a pretty long life, and it's about the point where major things start needing major attention.

Good luck!

It would be pretty unusual for the bottom end to let go on one of these motors unless it's sucked water, been modified, or poorly maintained. When I worked at the Mitsu dealer, I took apart several 4G94s with comparable mileage that had been hydrolocked and the bearings and cylinder walls looked brand new. These engines just don't make enough power to blow themselves up. However, the valve seals are not of the greatest quality and get very hard with time and miles. My guess would be this is where at least 75% of your oil is going.

2008 lancer 2.0l 185k

Hey this car has ran synthetic since day one got 185k changed reg it's never had a tune up ran great

But now out of no where it burning oil I had to add almost 2 litres but it is due for an oil change

It does not leak a drop

If anything it doesn't accelerate or have full power like day 1 kinda sluggish just barely

I don't know if I should sell it trade it or this is gonna be a big problem

I've read maybe the valve seals or rings what are the costs and where should I go I live in Vancouver

I need to change plugs and wires as well
