Oil Filter Change w/oil in engine
Hi guys.
I have a silly question, but I'm running synthetic oil in my lancer es and am getting ready to change just the filter at 3000 mi. I'm wondering if I would need to dump the oil out and change the filter being where the oil filter sits in relation to the pan? Or is it possible to change the filter with the oil still in the engine without substantial loss.

Honestly, I think the easiest way is to just change them both. Why risk clogging a new filter with dirty motor oil? Plus if you can accomplish the taks, it will make a mess, and you will lose at least a quart of oil.

I would recommend however you go in for an oil change.

This is a very easy and not too messy thing to do. I have done this a few times on my lancer. I like to wait until about 5,000-6,000 before I change out the filter.
You could step up to a long life filter on the next oil change and not touch it for up to 25,000 miles.
