How do you take off the retaining nut from front strut?
As the title says, how do I take off retaining nut on the top of the strut? I guess I can put a pipe wrench on the rod of the strut, but how am I supposed to torque down that nut with the new strut without scratching it?
Btw, I am using a breaker bar and not any air tools...there should be another way to do this, right?
Here is a crappy picture of it...it is the nut in the middle.

you can see above the nut where the flat part is.. use a set of vice grips to hold the rod while you loosen or tighten the nut.
you will have to remove the strut first from the car though.
and also use spring compressors so the spring doesn't fly off the strut and find a new home attached into your face.

Thanks guys, gonna attempt it again today. I had everything set, even compressed the springs with the spring compressor, but I didn't have an impact wrench...now I do and it's time to do this thing!

Well that was pretty painless. I've only done the fronts so far, since this warm weather made me turn into a cleaning machine. I just opened up space for another car in my garage!
Anyways, I solved the problem of the retaining nut turning the rod by having a friend take a plumbing wrench and holding onto it while I took the impact wrench and loosened it. Worked like a charm. When tightening, I folded up a shop rag and put that between the wrench and rod so it would not scratch. Worked perfect too.
And the car now is...wow. My front left shock was so blown that the rod would fall into the housing. Pretty cool. I was surprised how un-bouncy the car was even with the blown shocks, but with the new shocks...it took me back to the first day I drove it home new. Nice, tight, predictable handling. On crappy tires too, nonetheless.
150K miles and still kicking...go Lancer!
