2002 Lancer OZ "thumpping" noise
Hello everyone
Im working on my friends 2002 lancer
When you accelorate once you hit about 40 there is this loud "thumpping" sound comeon from what feels like the pass side floor
Once you turn the wheel even slightly to the right the noise stops, turn to the left and it doesnt change at all
once you let off the gas the sound gets quiter but doesnt stop it all
im leaning toward wheel bearing but feel it could also be the axle
Im a mechanic by trade but the car is at her house 30 mins away from me so i need to bring all my tools to her house to diag the problem so im looking for a bit of insite before i get over there tonight
any ideas?
thanks in advance, pete

I think your on the right track. I would put money on either axle or wheel bearing. Leaning more towards the wheel bearing since the noise goes away as soon as you start taking weight off the passenger side. I would start by lifting the front end off the ground and shake the wheel really good on the passenger side. Since your a mechanic you know there should be no play so if there is that is likely the problem. You can also run the car and slowly bring the speed up with the wheels off the ground while sitting down by the wheel and listening for the noise.
