Question Transmission Knocking

Ok so I've had my 2005 OZ Rally for about 2 years now and just recently while idling there is a knocking noise coming from the transmission side of the engine. It will come and go but a constant rhythm. Then when you shift into 1st and start to take off the knock becomes very loud and predominant and speeds up as the rpms go up. The knocking is very loud in first and second but becomes quieter as you get into 3rd and 4th gear and cant hear it in 5th gear. The noise is pretty constant when driving but will go away for a short while but come right back. Also the noise goes away when I put the clutch in. If anyone has any ideas what it is before I pay someone to look at it, it would be very much appreciated.

The input shaft bearing is a common failure point on these units but the way you described it is a little different than what is typical for that. Either way, it sounds like it needs to come out and either be repaired or replaced. Aside from the input shaft bearing and damage resulting from owner stupidity, these transmissions are otherwise not trouble-prone.
