Unhappy 2009 Lancer GTS won't start.

2009 Lancer GTS 104k miles on it no prior issues with the car

Car died in an intersection on Sat. and had it towed to a shop since I'm not exactly mechanically inclined. Got a call today saying that they can't even get the car to start by hand turning the crank shaft that they think the engine is froze and that is typically because of a timing jump which could have mad the valves and pistons connect. That I was more than likely looking at having to rebuild the engine. But to be able to confirm their diagnoses it was at least 10 hours of labor to get the head off just to confirm. I guess my question for you guys is does that sound right?

Did you run it really hard? You could have blown the engine if you did. Stock GTS models can handle a bit, but every car has its breaking point. I know this cause I own the same thing. If you didn't run it hard, I'm not sure what I could be. Possibly something coincidentally came loose and just broke the whole thing. Try having them take the engine apart and looking for damage or missing pieces. Hope I can help.

If they can't crank turn by hand (spark plugs out/tranny in neutral) - then yeah - next step is a replacement engine. No need to spend $$ why it failed unless you anticipate a claim against Mitsu. SRY.

That sucks. First of all though, it doesn't take 10 hours to take a head off. I would say under 3 hours. Second, all they have to do is remove the camshafts and see if the engine rotates. If so, then the chain jumped teeth. If the chain broke, you can simply find that out by removing the valve cover.

I can take a cylinder head off a DD15 (Detroit Diesel 15L engine) in under 6 hours.

If a mechanic told me it took them 10hrs to remove a head. I would find another mechanic and I wouldn't value their opinion in life. Someone that has never done it before, and has limited tools, can do it much faster than that lol
