Project Fallen Mustang -- Camaro Mustang Challenge Car Restore
When good cars get mistreated.
CA car with 50k on body. Built in 2006 to CMC-1 rules (240whp era). Raced 3 weekends. Original owner moved to Michigan. In a divorce depute, sold the car for nothing to last owner in 2008. Last owner did 3 HPDE weekends with it then let it sit for the last 4 years...outside...
I tracked down the first owner/builder and have all of the cars history. Car is there. Just left for dead. But not anymore! I'll be racing this car in E1, CMC, PTB, and TTB.
1998 Mustang details:
1998 w/2000 "PI" motor.
Specs:
Engine:
2000 4.6l 2v SOHC
Last dynoed at 237 whp / race weight of 3250 lbs. w/ driver (50 lbs ballast)
Wide aluminum radiator with electric fan
Police Interceptor oil cooler
Transmission/Rear Diff:
Rebuilt 5 speed
Pro 5.0 Shifter
3.73 Detroit True-Trak differential
Moser axles
Brakes/Suspension:
95 cobra double piston front calipers with stainless steel lines
MM camber/caster plates
Bump steer kit
Subframe connectors
Rear MM lower control arms
Steeda strut tower brace
H&R Race Springs (800/200)
Koni Yellow shocks, front are single adjustable, rear are double adjustable
6pt Custom caged.
Very old photo...
Getting her home:
Back (yes, that is mold on the paint):
Interior:
---------------------------------
Now the upgrading and cleaning...
Test fitting my race seat:
At my race mechanics shop:
CMC-2 is now 260whp / 300wtq and 3200 lbs race weight. To get the car there I am adding long tube headers (per rules) and will re-tune the fuel pressure regulator on the dyno.
Will be using Carbotech XP12 CT412 and XP12 CT627 pads (f/r). 255/50R16 Toyo RA1 tires (series tire).
Need to re-fit new brake ducts. Add 1 windshield wiper. Re-paint interior. Install 5in tachometer, oil pressure and water temp gauges, and re-panel dash. Re-do battery and box. Notice the cable goes along the cage -- not wise or legal. New SFI roll padding in hand too. And center and window nets.
Will keep this updated as I move along. Next race is in August for me. Going to run Time Trials with it to shake her down.

Probably a good thing I didn't go look at that for you. I would've been hesitant to give it a thumbs up if it had been sitting that long to have mold growing on it.

Yeah, I think in the end the car will be good...right now...don't ask me.
20 hours of work on it so far.
Found that it has a lot of "home grown" mechanics to it that so far have taken 20 hours of service to fix/repair/replace.
Exhibit 1:
Rear diff out. Why? Someone tried to repair a bearing poorly. One must have frozen up. They attempted to replace it. Left the axle in with wear marks from last bearing and metal shavings from last failure (didn't clean and drain diff). Diff is OK. Needed 2 new Moser axles though (not amused).
Upgrades:
LT headers are a major PITA. 8 hours fitting and getting them to bolt up. These take the cake for annoying and tight space. 98 Camaro, with lowering the motor, was easier.
275/45ZR16 Goodyear Eagle RS RC Compound race tires.

Headers were always a ***** on those years. I did a set with a friend of mine. I wanted to kill everything and everyone by the end of it.
Doesn't shock me that the screwed up a bearing replace. I had someone install my 4.55's in my 2001, and they managed to screw it up (and being a Ford-specific performance shop, you'd think they know how to do a gear swap).
