Been playing around with the idea of replacing the Evo with an R32 GTR. It seems like its a step in the wrong direction. I just want something with 6 cylinders, really something different from 4cylinder turbos, and love the fact that the R32 is JDM and rare kind of.

It seems the price range they're going for is 20-25 which is pretty steep for a 25+ year old car thats most likely rusting away.

Any one have any experience or thoughts/input? I prefer the R34, but when those come stateside, I'm guessing they will be going for 40-50k+.

- Early R32 had the oil pump gear issue (crank did not engage enough area and they exploded)
- The rear of the head has oiling issues
- @ 25 years they are prone to rust issues
- The 4WD steering system is on 25 years at this point and may need maintenance
- Parts are not readily available (although several items do swap over with the 300ZX for instance)
- Old. They are at minimum 25 years old.
- Maintenance can be costly
- Twin Turbos and the non existent space to service them (just go big single. You do not lose any response and it makes servicing 10 times easier)
- JDM hype and price premium.
- Weight.

R34 stateside will be much higher than 40-50K considering they are going for that now overseas and prices for those are already on the rise.

Now, with that said, there is a abundant supply (already stateside) that are in extremely good condition and maintenance was up to date.

I know of one in Chicago for 25K and has a good amount of parts already installed, no rust, etc etc.

When I was looking for my Evo I drove one for sale totally original, it felt large and squeaky, big steering wheel and everything rattled, big steering wheel, it felt like driving a sand barge compared to the Evo, having said that in Aus they are becoming collectable, there was a limited number sold here in order to race at Bathurst the rest are grey imports. As said above they need work and twin turbos cost alot, here it's usually 10k to replace or go big single. Modded they do kick serious but but age is against them now, stick with the Evo

There's a cool video of a guy who imported one and everyone was waving and smiling at him when he was driving around, is that a nissaarnn!! Lol

I've driven tuned and stock R32s, in Japan.
And have "shopped" for R34 when new in Japan.
Than later on I've lurked in depth around mint super cleverly developed nicest R33 you can find on earth here in California.

Fact is R32 is OLD CAR, its engine is super large/heavy lump, and its transfer case/transmission same. They are massive compared to small light Evo, yet..Evo puts 1000whp+ no problem..technology!!

The R32 is cute Japanese Camaro today, but if you like to drive, buy the newest model of particular car you like/want, you can afford- not old.

The R32 is legend in history, but old man in present time.
Its of course nice to see it, but Evo is far better sports car

I'm gonna say if you have to ask, then no. its a car for people that know they want it and want it bad and don't care about the potential issues

at least in the US, if you're in a country where it was sold new at the Nissan dealer then its just like buying any other car that old

Yeah, I've been trying to plan out a day to drive up there, havent had a chance to.

If you decide you want one, consider importing one from Japan or Canada. You will likely pay a premium for one that is already stateside. I can put you in touch with an importer in Victoria, BC that I have worked with in the past. Stand up guy and usually has a few choice cars in stock.

I have evo8 semi built, r32 gtr fully built 1000hp, r33gts with an rb25 swap.so I'm not bias
The gtr is an awesome machine the awd system is not a thing to really worry about yes it old but is built so well and simple. The oiling issue with the head is a rather simple fix but only is a problem if ur endurance racing the motor or if your doing like 600 donuts in a row. Basically the oil gets built up on the back half of the cam in the head and cams can snap but like I said only happens if someone is really pushing the engine and in turns at long periods.the biggest problem is rust .so get from a well know importer or one u can see before buying the rb26 is a badass motor u can make 600 hp easy with a e85 tune and a cheap horsetail turbo with good.injectors so buy one and have fun
