Dave Brown and Goodsport Evo take USTCC Championship

Dave Brown managed to clinch his second consecutive Hankook United States Touring Car Championship title without even being present at the USTCC race in Road America on October 21-22, 2006. Brown joins only Tom Lepper as the only person that has won back to back championships.

Going into the Road America round of the USTCC, Brown had still not been able to clinch his Driver’s Championship. Brown had a good lead but Toby Grahovec still had a mathematical chance to beat Brown for the title. For Grahovec to win the title meant that many things would have to go his way. One of them was that there needed to be 10 cars starting the race at Road America and he would need to win the Road America race. Without that Grahovec would not have a chance. As it turned out, Grahovec did win the race but could not get full points due to the smaller field.

The entire team and our network of friends and partners did an unbelievable job of development and maintenance to ensure that Dave always had a reliable, competitive car. We would have faded away mid-season without the help of fantastic sponsors like K&N Engineering, Works, Robispec, Pacersport Wheels, LeMans Karting of Fremont, APR Performance, Hawk Brakes, Hankook Tires, and San Rafael Mitsubishi.

Crew members Jeffrey Galasco, Tony Virelas, Chris Hovey, Glen Olsen, and Thomas Illick never missed a beat and did an admirable job of making sure the Evo was perfect before we got to the track. The team also was great about making due with what we had, and were able to do a lot more with the generosity of our friends and competitors who showed true sportsmanship by often loaning tools, supplies, and equipment.

Pete Kang and the entire WORKS organization gave more of themselves than I ever expected, and were the reason we were able to maintain our performance advantage despite increasing pressure from the rulebook.

Robert Fuller from Robispec gave us a suspension that never had any issues, as well as very close baseline setups which required minimal tuning (i.e. testing $$$$$) before each event. His attendance at many of the events was also much appreciated, especially his tireless and critical efforts at Miller Motorsports Park.

Larry Marsala from Add Lightness Motorsports was the man of the year, loaning us an enclosed trailer for the entire season, and making sure we were legal BEFORE we got to the race...Larry is the NASA Norcal Scrutineer and his actions demonstrate that tech officials will be cool to you if you are cool with them and just follow the rules.

And then of course there is Dave Brown, a true professional. Dave ran a perfect season, with no DNFs, crashes, breakage, or any misstep of any kind. Winning four out of six races, Dave proved once and for all that he can drive anything, anywhere, anytime, and bring it home safe. It was certainly a pleasure to work with Dave this year, and we look forward to helping him get into the high-level pro ride that he deserves.

Look for the Goodsport Evo in the 2006 running of the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, and next year in the All Wheel Drive Challenge, awdchallenge.com.
