TRACK TEST: Nitto NT-05 -vs- Federal 595 RS-R

Just a little g'wiz for size comparison between the two... both sets are 255/40/17... I plan to hit up Cal Speedway Aug 15th with SV to get a full and true track test on the 255's....

heres a little write up from the El Toro Mitsubishi Super Store/SocalEvo.net meet...

I've used the NT-05 throughout the past year and a half extensively for track use only and I have to say I really enjoy the tire. Given the extreme camber our cars love so much results in odd wear in the tire due to the grand canyon grooving. But they can last (2) entire weekends before flipping them and then another (2)day track weekend, totaling (4) heavy track days...

I'm testing out the Federal 595RS-r at the moment and the current size they had available for me was a 235/45/17 tire. The odd thing was that the width of the 235/45 595RS-r was just as wide as my 255/40 Nitto NT-05. I autocrossed them, non-competitively, last weekend at the MitsubishiSuperStore/SocalEvo.net meet on a fairly large autocross track... One of the faster cars was running on Hankook r-comps in the 74second range, along with Rigo (I need mo powa) and Jeff (20yr vet, Pikes Peak winna), with me right behind them all in the 75second range (not so avid auto-x'r with a laggy gt3076 turbo set up for 370hp on 91)... I was really trying to figure out the tire pressure in the Federals and it came out to be in the low 30's, 32psi hot to be exact. I kept the rear at 40psi to help the rearend come around a lil, but it just wouldn't happen at all... The Nittos love pressure and I would cruise them at 38-40psi depending on how the track is/was... The 595rs-r had huge stopping power with rabestos st-43 pads, along with pretty stiff sidewalls with low TP and the squish technique (lol) being the sophisticated tools used for the sidewall test results. I did start to experience tire roll over at 30psi...

Now this was far from a true tire test and I am by no means an autocrosser, so I will give a full write in my environment on the Federals when I receive them in my proper tires size of the 255/40/17 and put them on a real track, such as Buttonwillow, Big Willow, Cal Speedway or the like... all in all, I'm having high hopes for the Federal 595RS-R...

Nice write up...

The federal rs do run a size bigger than what they say. this is because the side wall is a little soft and the tread foot print will sit like a 245 when its really a 235.

Dont be confused with the (2) different Federal models.... These are the 595 RS-R and not the older model 595 RS (no extra hyphened "R")...

the RS-R treadware is 140 compared to the older RS of 180 as well...

btw
are those 255 by 255 side by side... If so, the 255s federal compare near the nt05 275s... kinda like the R888 which happen to be wider than the 275s by a good margin,.. hmm, do the federals have another size higher aside the 255 on a 17" range?? it would be interesting to see how wider they happen to be, when comparing them side by side... and the width of the wheel to support it.. XD

Yes, their both unmounted 255's showing a side-by-side comparison... the current 235's I have on my car are just as wide as the Nitto 255's...

at the moment, a 255 sized tire is the largest in a 17" wheel... they do have a 265 in a 18" wheel size...

==================================================

they also have R-comps to spice it up a bit....

Looking forward to your test results!

Do you know when Federal actually intends, or if they do intend, to bring those R-Compound Corza FZ-201/202? to the states? They need more sizes for those r-comps.

Also, how much do these 595 RS-R run for in 255/40/17?

-W

P.S. I hope your test is not questionable biased towards your new sponsor

I can try to see when and if they will/are bringing some of their R-comp lineup.... You'll have to hit up City Tire to get a price quote. I'm not a vendor and I dont wanna step on toes...

but it truly is a budget street/track tire that I am surprised nobody in the Evo community has given Federal a shot, or at least documented, until this guy........

I will make it as unbiased as possible compared to the Nitto's....
I can already say with the softer compound of the Federals to the Nitto's, and the width advantage. I can only hope to drop my best times and have lesser temp drop off with those differences...

Federal 595RS-R

Yes, let us know how they perform, and send some pictures of the tire treads after you're done.

The reason I ask for the post-activity pics is due to the article (URL below) and the rather disturbing crease down the center of some Federal 595RS tires that looks like the tires are ready to split right down the center (http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38857). Don't know if the manufacturing process of the 595RS-R is any different than the 595RS, but I'd be a little worried with that "split" down the center.

I'm interested to see your pics after you're driven them hard.

I seen that post in the past and it is several years old, so I can only hope for the best... I can take pics of the current 235 sized 595rs-r's that I auto-X on for a solid hour...

My bad for the ancient thread bump but has this been an issue with the newer 595rs-r's?

a friend of mine put some on his daughter's Neon (for autox events). they did a really good job, i think. they handled the heat decent and gripped nicely. her car is really light, though.

they didn't feel as grippy as the Hankook R-S3 i ran at the time, but they aren't supposed to be, i'm guessing?

for the price? definitely worth it. if looking for amazing grip? i'd go Hankook or RE71R, unless the new 595 takes a few leaps forward.
