2015 STU Discussion!

2014... the first year of anyone in a 2WD that can really use 285s. With victories all over the left coast, followed by a dominating win at Nationals on what were allegedly the old, slower Hankook RS3s (and, let's be clear, an excellent driver), it does not look good for the future of the buggies. With lots of new talent coming to the class in Z's and C5's, some have said the reign of the buggies may be... over.

Over?

Bluto: What? Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: Germans?
Boon: Forget it. He's rolling.
Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough . . . the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go! C'mon!

We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in Lincoln, we shall fight on the wallons and slaloms, we shall fight on the eybrows, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the sweepers. We shall defend our paddock whatever the cost may be.
... and get your letters ready for if it all goes sideways

Should be a bunch of new tires this year to keep things interesting.

FWIW, the OSG C5 made about 35whp more than my BSP car would on the Church dyno (against a car that makes similar power on a dynojet)....

....and 90ftlbs more tq.

My car made WAY more power than BP's 350, too...so....ouch.

On some level I think we'd all love to go to SM.

If only our budgets would allow.

^LOL and then there are those of us got their evo did a few bolts, ended up in SM regretted touching the car in the first place but cant fathom the idea of demodding the car to compete in a more sane class...

^I've been wanting that for years now...some local clubs I've raced with in the past had a SM street tire index like down in Philly for example which I thought was great. Once you go with real rubber that ish gets expensive quick as you start breaking parts left and right. Not sure Im crazy or stupid enough to strap on some hohos to my DD.

We "only" buy 2 sets a year but then have to maintain a street tire incase it rains since wets are another huge cost with a life time based on date instead of use and not enough use to justify.

Would love to run a 285 street tire in the class and I know many others including a certain white monster that would love street tires too.

That's my plan for this season. I don't really do SCCA since my car isnt competitive in SM on street tires.

Luckily my local clubs are more lenient with classing and its a more freeforall albeit the competition isnt typically as fierce. There are a handful of folks that can wheel and the rest are meh.

But yeah my trusty 17x9.5 NT03's with 255's is getting an older brother this season aka 18x10.5 NT03's with 285's...should be fun.

My car goes slideways a lot on 315 hoosiers. It would be... interesting... to autox on street tires.

This being the STU thread, if I had to do it over I probably would have built for STU and ran that a few years before making the leap. The expense of SM is much more, although having a good codriver to share variable costs with is key. Now that I'm hooked on rcomps and powa, there's no turning back

Ive run with 255 ZII's quite a bit and its not bad especially considering the car is really setup for the hoosiers. If I dedicated the car to a set of 285/295 whatevers then I would be just as balanced. You'd soften things up a bit but it doesn't have much effect on AWD accelerating.

Thankfully the Crows Landing events were moved up to April this year!

I'll be at the Crows Landing NT, maybe San Diego, and if the budget allows, I might make my first trip to Lincoln
