Street performance isn't really a factor here. But on track, I know a couple people that use them and are fast. I can't say how long they last or anything, for that matter LOL.
I just know they run 1:53s at BWRP which is pretty danged respectable.
From what I read, they would be faster on other tires, though. I wonder what they are leaving on the table.

I've done some googling and reading, and apparently the R888r is the same compound as the R888. The new tread pattern just gives a much larger contact patch, which increases grip. I will be avoiding that tire..

Not exactly sure what that means. They lose their "grip" before wearing down the tread?

I have raced: Toyo RA-1, Hoosier R6, A6, NT01's, Kuhmo V700, Yoko a005, Maxxis Rc1, BFG r1's and Hankook TD's.

The R888 were absolutely horrible on the track (for me). They felt like I was driving on frozen turds. I would take a dedicated street tire like a Hankook RS3 or BFG Rival etc or a 888 anyday. I think if you delve a littler deeper you will find many people who dislike the r888's. One thing they have going for them is a nice size line up and decent price and that is what has kept them alive. I remember when I raced spec miata and they switched to R888s everyone threw a **** fit for good reason, needless to say they switched back to RA-1's

Seems like RA-1's are long in the tooth. What other tire, that can double as a rain tire, are people looking to?

Yes, that's exactly what it means, they can lose grip due to heat cylces before wearing out.

I agree with the R888 feedback. NT01's are way way way way way better over their life than R888's.

The R888's are horrible on evos as they get greasy super quick and they heat cycle out very fast.

NT01's are good down to the last bit.

I would run a RS3, AD08R, Z2 SS or RE71 before R888's any day of the week.

I recently spoke to my chassis setup guy, and he really like the R88r. Feels it's better than the NT01. He races a 2200lb civic hatch though. Debating on what to do for my next set of tires. NT01, R888r, or RC-1.

I'm most likely going to the Hankook Z214's after this set of NT01. Although the NT01's have been sitting around for almost a year since my motor blew up so maybe I will switch to the Hankook's sooner than later...

I don't feel like I'm ready for a full slick race tire yet.

I'm in a similar boat. My NT01 sitting around while I complete my build.

Covered them from any light, and deflated them. Also they are inside the house so not subject to large temperature fluctuations.

Should be good to go still per my reading on the subject.

V.8MR, since your tires are still a sticker set, they'll be fine. Good call on deflating them though. That will be a big help in preventing them from drying up.

Some track buddies I have hate the RE71R, they say they dont last and get greasy.
I still bought them and noticed they get hot quick and the pressures sky rocket quickly.

So what i do it keep them around 34-35 psi hot. And that seems to help ALOT. I love how sticky they are. They offer SOOOO much grip.
I think heat management of tires is key. I also ALWAYS do 1 or 2 cool down laps before parking the car.

I am looking forward to the RS4. If they are almost as sticky as the RE71R, im game.

Since I drive my car to the track, I'm looking for a tire that will be a decent street tire for commuting to the track and also double as a track day rain tire (non-competitive events). I'm leaning in the direction of the MPSS.

The MPSS is on it's way out. It will soon only be available in OEM sizing. The Pilot Sport 4 is replacing it.
